Background | |
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The scope of work of the UN Women Economic Empowerment Advisor requires experience and in-depth understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment issues, as well as management and programming expertise, to translate UN Women's strategic plans into effective development initiatives and results. It also requires developing mutually reinforcing partnerships with relevant Government counterparts, UN organizations, CSOs, and with bilateral and non-traditional donors in order to promote inter-agency partnerships, support for UN reform, and mobilization of visibility and resources to advance gender equality and women's empowerment.
UN Women in West and Central Africa represent the most deprived slice of the population in spite of their paramount social and economic role in the community and in the family. They have little access to, and virtually no control over available resources, as the result of unfair social, cultural and economic norms.
The vision of UN Women’ strategic plan in West & Central Africa is 'enabling a more secure world for African women'. The plan has adopted a national and sub-regional approach to advancing gender equality and women empowerment, and committed - among other strategies - to:
Within the UN System, playing a leading role in Gender Theme Groups and Donor Gender Groups, and supporting UNDAF processes with a focus on human rights, governance, institutional frameworks, and domestication of international conventions and other relevant instruments that promote gender equity and equality.
The Economic Empowerment Advisor portfolio of UN Women West & Central Africa consists of Economic Empowerment programmes related to women’s livelihoods, entrepreneurship, market access and other resource based initiatives, gender-sensible business legal environment, national Gender planning and Budgeting, New Aid Modalities, Gender Equitable Local Development, etc implemented in twenty five countries. The Economic Empowerment Advisor will support the Economic Empowerment programme portfolio and provide specialist advice and technical support to programme/project development, monitoring and coordination in the area of gender, poverty alleviation and economic rights at UN Women WACARO.
The Economic Empowerment Advisor will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the UN Women WACARO Deputy Regional Director (D/RD) and in close consultation with the UN Women Programme Specialists with the overall aim to support UN Women Economic Empowerment Rights & Gender Budgeting programmes and donor commitments.
The Economic Empowerment Advisor will effectively assume strategic and substantive leadership for the integration of UN Women's strategies and values in women's economic empowerment & gender responsive budgeting programmes throughout the Region. This covers supporting fundraising, communication and partnership-building, evaluation and knowledge management; and ensuring information flow and team-building across the diverse network of partners and stakeholders involved in various Economic Empowerment programmes.

Note:
In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
