ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER

A world leading steel producer with large Iron Ore operations in West Africa are currently looking to hire an Environmental Manager  for their project in Liberia.  
   
Mission
- Ensure that the company fulfils its obligations in terms of the Environmental Management Plans and the upholding of the agreed Environmental Standards.
- Provide on-site environmental management to support the Project Director and Area Construction Managers, supervisors and contractors.
- Provide strategic support as a team member and a pro-active approach to environmental processes.
- Provide training and support to environmental awareness among project personnel.
- The Environmental Manager is the key person to ensure that the company and its contractors meet high environmental standards in all aspects of its project activities.  
- This is a fully hands-on, site-based role as part of a small, practical team.
 
Main Accountabilities
- Manage environmental issues on site, including the direction of the Environmental Co-ordinator, Environmental Officers and any other staff assigned to work on environmental issues.
- Provide positive and demonstrated leadership on environmental issues within all areas of project activity, in line with the relevant sections of the Project Management Plan.
- Read, understand and implement the environmental policies, plans, standards and procedures.
- Liaise closely with the Environmental Adviser, whose main responsibility is to ensure compliance with the environmental legislative framework.  Ensure that provisions and conditions from environmental compliance documents and permits are translated into practical management actions.
- Promote an enthusiastic environmental culture that delivers positive commitment to and engages all employees in continuous improvement in environmental performance.
- Monitor compliance by personnel for their individual responsibilities to environmental matters.
- Provide technical advice on environmental matters, and ensure contractor programmes comply with Environmental Policies, Standards and legal requirements.
- Provide technical advice on chemical and physical agent behaviour, impact and control as they affect the environment and health of employees, users and people in the nearby communities.
- Provide advice to project personnel on strategies and problem-solving on environmental matters.
- Ensure contractors prepare and follow Environmental Task Cards and Method Statements in compliance with the The Company Project Environmental Management Plans.
- Inspect and sign off contractors' Task Cards, Method Statements and Environmental Management Plans.
- Ensure implementation of, and compliance with the project waste management system as specified in the The Company Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Plan.
- Ensure contractor compliance with chemical storage facilities and MSDS's.
- Initiate and conduct environmental audits as specified in the WRIOP Environmental Monitoring System.
- Conduct daily environmental inspections of camps, workshops, storage facilities, lay down yards, work areas and their vicinities, to verify contractor compliance with environmental management requirements.
- Conduct site inspections related to waste disposal and industrial hygiene, protective clothing and the storage of potentially hazardous chemicals and other substances.
- Inspect plant and equipment to prevent environmental spills and ground contamination.
- Provide environmental compliance reports to the Project Director and Construction Managers, on frequencies agreed with them.
- Compile weekly environmental progress reports and participate in the compilation of monthly progress reports.
- Assist in the roll out of environmental information related to site activities.
- Initiate interventions to prevent environmental incidents.
- Participate in all relevant co-ordination meetings with construction teams and other support departments (particularly community, resettlement, health and safety, security and logistics).
- Participate in management and contractor walkabouts.
- Conduct risk management inspections for the identification of environmental hazards in the workplace and recommend corrective or preventative measures to avoid any lapses.
- Lead environmental incident investigations and co-ordinate corrective actions.
 
Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree or National Higher Diploma in environmental health, environmental sciences/management or similar is required.
- Mininmum of 10 years relevant work expereince is required with atleast 3-5 of those years at a management level.
- Should be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in / understanding of and a good knowledge of environmental issues, relevant legislation and renewable energy sources.
- Should possess confidence, initiative, commercial awareness and excellent IT, organisational, negotiation, team-working, presentation, project management and communication skills.
- Experience working in Africa and specifically West Africa would be highly advantageous.
