Senior French Editor / Writer

by Unknown  |  at  4:07 AM

Chemonics seeks a short-term senior French editor/writer to support the USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET III), which produces analysis grounded in a formal understanding of factors that influence food security and contributes to the international knowledge base. FEWS NET analysis includes comprehensive factors such as markets and trade, agroclimatology, livelihoods, and nutrition; data on poor households' income and on yearly averages for crop production and rainfall; and maps of regional trade flows.
Currently, FEWS NET is undertaking a major effort to expand the repertoire of products available in this knowledge base. Specifically, the project intends to develop in-depth reports devoted to explaining the context for certain food security drivers, particularly markets and trade and nutrition. These documents are anticipated to be 15 to 30 pages in length, while some are anticipated to be 50 to 90 pages. All documents will have considerable technical detail and supporting images. In 2015, FEWS NET plans to produce markets and trade and nutrition context documents on some 20 countries.
The primary task of this assignment is editorial and writing support to ensure the reports are clear, concise, and accessible to readers, including those that are not technical experts on the subject matter. In addition, some support may be needed on new or existing products on agroclimatology and livelihoods. The senior editor/writer will take responsibility for the final review and copyedit of these context documents, and directly report to the FEWS NET communications advisor or delegate. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.
Responsibilities include:
  • Review and edit reports, ensuring the clarity and simplicity of language, grammatical excellence, and consistency in style and format
  • Copyedit and proofread with rigorous attention to detail
  • Collaborate with communications team and technical advisors as needed to ensure a smooth editorial process
Deliverables:
The senior editor will edit the final technical draft of reports as they become available and complete and return them to the communications advisor within 10 working days unless another agreement is made. The editor is responsible for providing the following:
  • For each document, a full edit with changes tracked and explanations noted as necessary
  • For each document, two additional rounds of follow-up edits, as requested by the FEWS NET communications advisor or delegate
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant editing and writing experience, particularly with technical reports on development or humanitarian issues
  • Knowledge of humanitarian assistance, international development, and the operations of international agencies required, with technical exposure to food security desired
  • Extensive experience writing for international audiences such as the United Nations and other agencies
  • Experience working in developing countries, preferably those covered by FEWS NET
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • English fluency preferred
