The bursary is provided by Mr Ken Hodcroft and Mr Berge Larsen, alumni.
Up to four bursaries are available to female students accepted onto one of the following one year taught MSc courses:

  • have and be able to demonstrate financial need for the award

The selection process for this bursey is competitive. The number of awards made depends on the quality of the applications.

Kennedy Scholarships 2016-17

Location Harvard & MIT,
Applications are invited for Kennedy Scholarships to enable British citizens, educated in the UK, to take graduate programmes across the full range of Schools and courses at Harvard and MIT
Kennedy Scholarships comprise full tuition and health insurance fees, a generous stipend for living, a contribution to transatlantic travel and a discretionary grant for vacation travel in the USA. They are part of the British national memorial to President Kennedy and have been awarded annually in competition since 1965 with many former scholars now in leading positions.
Up to 10 awards will be offered for 2016-17.
All applicants must have studied at a UK University or University College. In addition, they may be: studying for a first degree and due to graduate in the academic year 2015-2016, or a graduate of a UK university or university college who has completed a first degree not earlier than 2011 and who will have spent at least 2 of the 7 academic years prior to 01.09.2016 at a UK university or university college.
Awards will not be made to postdoctoral candidates wishing to pursue further research in their own field.
Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of their chosen programmes and, in addition to their Kennedy Scholarship application, should submit a separate and independent application to their preferred School, meeting all deadlines etc.
A Kennedy Scholarship does not guarantee admission to Harvard or MIT.

Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellowships in Sociology at Nuffield College

(Two posts)
Nuffield College intends to appoint with effect from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter, two Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellows (PPRFs) in Sociology, broadly construed to include sociology, demography, social and medical statistics, social psychology, public policy, and social policy. Applicants who wish to undertake research in Economic History, or interdisciplinary research in Sociology which includes Economics and/or Politics are also welcome to apply for the Fellowships. The College particularly encourages applications from candidates who work or plan to work in the field of one or more of the College’s Sociology Fellows.
The key responsibilities of the Research Fellows are to engage in advanced study and independent scholarly research in sociology broadly construed (as above); to disseminate research findings through publication and participation in conferences and workshops; and to take part in the intellectual life of the College by organising workshops, seminars or conferences. Research Fellows may also undertake ad hoc paid teaching or supervision within the collegiate University, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
To be eligible, candidates should hold a bachelors and/or masters degree in a relevant field and should by 1 September 2016 have completed, or be close to completing, a doctorate. Candidates must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously held a research fellowship similar to that advertised for more than one year at the time of taking up the fellowship. Allowances will be made for career breaks (for example, family-related leave) and candidates are asked to provide relevant justification. Prospective candidates should also have experience of carrying out independent research and a track record of excellent quality papers appropriate for and commensurate with their career level. They should have the willingness to contribute to the intellectual life of the College, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The posts are fixed-term for three years, starting on 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. Research Fellows are entitled to single accommodation in College (at a subsidised rate). Further benefits include a research allowance, free lunch and dinner in College and child support funds.

Panel Member Appointments - Historical Child Abuse Inquiry Scotland

The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong learning, Angela Constance MSP, made a statement in Parliament in December 2014 announcing the Scottish Government’s intention to hold a National Inquiry into Historical Child Abuse. The Chair to the Inquiry, Susan O’Brien QC, and Terms of Reference were announced in late May 2015. Applications are now invited from candidates for appointment as Panel members.
The Inquiry is to be held under the Inquiries Act 2005 (“the Act”) and is a Scotland Inquiry in terms of section 1(2)(b) and section 28 of the Act. Panel members, along with the Chair, will form the Inquiry Panel in terms of the Act. The setting up date for the inquiry will be no later than 1 October 2015.
Applications are invited from real experts in their fields, who have a high level of professional recognition for example expertise or background in one or more of the following areas:
  • Psychology or Psychiatry, in particular those with experience in working with adults or children who have been abused in a residential care setting; or of taking evidence from people who were abused in childhood/children who have been abused.
  • Experience of running successful residential or secure care establishments or institutions for children or similar.
  • Social work practitioner at a senior leadership level, in particular those with considerable practical experience working with children in care, child protection or safeguarding.
  • Academic or medical research at a high level into any of the issues which will be explored by the Inquiry.
  • Regulation or Inspection of bodies with responsibility for children in care.
  • Experience in the implementation of policy and practice relating to some of the issues to be explored by the Inquiry.
Candidates whose experience arises outside Scotland are very welcome.

Basic qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree and/or a M.D./Ph.D. in immunology or related discipline.
• Demonstrated history of excellence in T-cell biology and/or cell and gene therapy.
• Experience in molecular biological techniques including cloning, viral based gene transfer (e.g. Lentivirus) into cell lines and primary immune cells, producing and manipulating lentiviral constructs and transduction techniques.
• Good knowledge and practical experience in cell culture techniques, multi-colour flow cytometry and immune based assay (e.g. cytokine release assays, cell surface marker analysis, intracellular flow cytometry, assessment of T-cell functionality).
• Ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data to a range of audiences and must be comfortable conversing with opinion leaders regarding highly technical information. 
• Self-motivated with an ability to handle multiple projects concurrently. 
• Ability to trouble-shoot occurring problems and develop improved processes, with a good balance of creative and analytical skills. 
• Strong communication skills. 
• An ability to be productive and successful in an intense work environment.
 Preferred qualifications:
• Experience of working in, or alongside, a Pharma or Biotech company would be an advantage.
• Basic and proven understanding of data quality. 
• Experience in working with tumour infiltrating lymphocytes
• Experience in conducting animal work. 
• Good knowledge of tumour biology.

In 2014, GlaxoSmithKline has stepped up to become a leader in Cell and Gene Therapy . The newly formed platform research discovery group, in Stevenage, is supporting R&D Therapy Areas, collaborating with academic leaders and identifying and acquiring enabling technology platforms essential to meet GSK’s ambition in the field. This post-doctoral role is a collaboration between GSK platform research discovery group and the laboratory of Dr David Gilham within the Clinical and Experimental Immunotherapy group at the Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Manchester. 
We are looking for a post-doc with a strong background in fundamental and translational biology for a three years fix-term project related to chimeric antibody receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy of solid tumours. This project will be conducted at Manchester University. 

The goals of the project is to:

• Generate Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TIL) and autologous cell lines using and refining state of the art extracting and expansion methodology.
• Deliver chimeric antibody receptor to Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TIL) or T-cells using Lentivirus.
• Conduct in vitro functional assessment and comparison of the CAR-T therapies using state of the art flow cytometry methodology and cell culture assays . 
• With a positive outcome of the assessment, the aim is to conduct further investigation leading potentially to pre-clinical assessment.

The project goals are amenable to publication, yet linked to our aim to increase cell and gene therapy research platforms knowledge.

This is a three years fix-term position with a competitive salary.
