Description:

FHI 360 seeks a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist** for a USAID Zambia Feed the Future program that aims to reduce stunting in two targeted districts through increased and improved quality of dietary and health conditions for better utilization of nutrients. The program seeks to influence nutritional outcomes through an integrated approach that emphasizes household and community level interventions and social and behavior change mechanisms for maximum saturation and impact. Activities will support increased access to and consumption of nutrient-dense and protein-rich food, optimal infant and young child feeding practices, and access to clean water and appropriate and effective health, family planning and nutrition services. The WASH Specialist will oversee and provide technical leadership in the design, implementation and monitoring of appropriate WASH interventions in close cooperation with the Nutrition Advisor and other program and technical staff to ensure synergies between nutrition, health and WASH-related activities, as well as with the SBCC Specialist to ensure appropriate messaging is developed and incorporated effectively. The WASH Specialist will also work with implementing partners, stakeholders, USAID and other donors operating in Zambia.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership on improving WASH activities that aim to improve the policy and operating environment in ways that are sensitive especially to young children;
  • Develop and maintain relationships and work closely with local WASH actors, including national and local government, private sector, community, NGOs, other donors, etc.
  • Contribute to program/project design, implementation, learning, and monitoring and evaluation through active collaboration with all team members;
  • Work closely with technical staff and SBCC Specialist to integrate relevant WASH messaging into and manage the use of SBCC tools and materials across project;
  • Contribute to and provide inputs of annual work plan, required project reports, baseline data, tools and indicators for monitoring and evaluation, collection / sharing of lessons learned;
  • Document lessons learned related, evaluate impact and modify approaches as needed.
  • Help develop internal organizational WASH-related training and development of tools, guidelines, standards to improve program quality;
  • Write background documents, briefs, and presentations, reviews, landscape analyses, and data analysis on WASH, as needed; and
  • Act as the program’s WASH representative as it relates to WASH initiatives in Zambia;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent - Economics, Education, Environment, Health, Human Development, Information Science, International Development, Social Sciences or Related Field.
  • Typically requires 5-8 years of managing data collection and technical assistance experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working on WASH initiatives in Zambia
  • Experience WASH initiatives in a combination of health and nutrition, livelihoods, gender, and agricultural development or similar Feed the Future initiatives
  • Applied knowledge/use of evidence-based behavior change practices
  • Experience working with relevant stakeholders, implementing partners, USAID and other donors
  • Written and oral proficiency in English
