Chief Engineer

Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in El Fasher. The Chief Engineer is responsible for providing civilian and military engineering support such as planning, designing, constructing, repairing, maintaining and liquidating structures, facilities and systems to meet mission requirements. The Chief Engineer normally reports to the Chief Supply Chain Management Service, and renders advice to chiefs of administration, integrated support services and/or the head of logistics operations in the mission.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Chief Engineer will perform following duties
  • Manages, coordinates and plans resources for Engineering projects of the civilian and military engineering support operations for African Union- United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).
  • Reviews and approves the design and supervises the construction or repair, by contractors or UN staff, of major structures, facilities, systems and activities such as buildings, roads, bridges, airfields, helipads, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, field defenses, mine detection and clearance, and related structures and activities in the field needed for the logistics support African Union- United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).
  • Provides expert technical advice on overall policies, procedures and guidelines for African Union- United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).
  • Analyzes mission budget proposals, ensuring that the funds proposed are adequate for engineering requirements. Provides data for internal and external audits.
  • Participates in and provides expert advice on long-range development planning relating to engineering support requirements and related aspects of peacekeeping and other UN missions.
  • Manages a Section of engineering staff.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in engineering, architecture or other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related area, including experience in planning and design of projects and facilities.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
