Freedom of Expression Coordinator

Background:
Lawyers for Justice in Libya (LFJL) is an independent non-governmental organisation and charity dedicated to promoting human rights in Libya through defending justice and promoting the rule of law. LFJL are recruiting a full-time project coordinator to lead the organisation of activities related to its freedom of expression project,Sawti(which meansboth ‘my voice’ and ‘my vote’ in Arabic).
Job description:
The systematic censorship and crackdown on free expression during the 42 years of the Gaddafi regime was on of the one of the core causes of the 2011 uprising. In spite of initial successes, such as the flourishing of free media and independent NGOs, freedom of expression is once again under threat in Libya. Several new laws have been passed in an attempt to illegitimately suppress free expression and criticism of state authorities. Journalists, lawyers, judges, and human rights activists have all been subjected to targeted attacks as armed non-state actors have attempted to silence critical voices.
The Freedom of Expression Project Coordinator will lead LFJL’s efforts to build understanding of this fundamental human right amongst the Libyan public and develop the capacity of key freedom of expression stakeholders. The project seeks to promote legal protection and the development of a national legal framework in harmony to international law.
Over the coming months, the Freedom of Expression Project Coordinator will primarily be tasked with the implementation of a human rights competition, the development of legal reports on freedom of expression in Libya, and the development of project related media.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting LFJL management with the implementation of activities
  • Leading the organisation of upcoming events and activities
  • Developing media to advance project messages with creative partners
  • Positively and professionally communicating project ideas with third party partners and project beneficiaries
  • Writing and editing legal reports, press releases, and social media posts to share information accurately, conciselyand appropriately
  • Tracking project progress and carrying out reporting activities
  • Managing interns and volunteers
  • Coordinating activities with colleagues and agents based in Libya
  • Staying informed and reacting to relevant news and events that relate to freedom of expression in Libya
Desired experience and qualities:
  • A post-graduate qualification in Law or a subject related to human rights
  • Excellent knowledge of human rights issues and freedom of expression
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and analytical skills
  • Willingness to take initiative and work independently
  • Prior experience working with a human rights NGO
  • Knowledge of current Libyan environment
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable
