Program Summary:
Winrock is accepting applications for a School Safety Specialist for an anticipated USAID education program in Mali. The program will focus on: decreasing key barriers girls face to access quality education; improving the safety of adolescent girls in schools and their communities; and increasing knowledge and adoption of positive health behaviors of adolescent girls. The position is contingent upon receipt of donor funding.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Design and lead activities that will increase safety for girls ages 10–18 in schools and in their communities:
- Oversee implementation of interventions to keep girls safe from the various forms of school-related gender-based violence, such as abuse or sexual exploitation on school grounds by peers or teachers, violence on the way to school, corporal punishment, and other forms of intimidation;
- Lead activities that engage families, community leaders, and peers to safeguard girls’ safety in the community and perceptions of it that keep girls out of school out of fear of violence;
- Advise, liaise with, and oversee capacity building for government officials and other key stakeholders with a focus on safeguarding girls;
- Work with key stakeholders in the communities and government to map services available to girls and build referral networks to safeguard adolescent girls and address school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) ;
- Contribute to all program progress reports (quarterly, annually, others).
- Providing input to other program activities as needed.
Qualifications and Background:
Education:
- Advanced degree in education, a social science, or other relevant subject preferred.
Work Experience:
- At least 7 years’ progressively responsible experience designing, managing, and implementing interventions to increase educational access for girls and/or other marginalized populations
- Strong familiarity with issues of school safety, including SRGBV
- Demonstrated ability to engage with government, school officials and community members in issues of school safety
Skills:
- Fluent French and local language skills required; additional language skills (English) desirable;
- Familiarity with the security situation in Mali and the risks that adolescent girls face
- Familiarity with USAID regulations, policies, and procedures or those of an equally complex international government funding organization;
- Ability to interface and communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders ranging from ministry officials, to security personnel, religious and traditional leaders, and community members;
- Ability to supervise diverse teams of staff in remote locations;
- Ability to manage for results in evolving environments and respond to changes with agility;
