Benin Microfinance Project Coordinator

The Benin Microfinance Project Coordinator works in conjunction with microfinance operator CAIES, supporting local partners in their daily tasks, auditing partners’ processes and issuing recommendations, collecting photos and videos of beneficiaries and staff partners, and supporting operations and finance team in specific tasks, depending on candidate’s availability and project needs (examples could include developing a marketing strategy, social impact analysis, or conducting trainings on financial management and/or technology usage). Pre-departure activities include following up on reports received from the field and ensuring implementation of recommended action items from previous staff.
This position offers the opportunity to develop microfinance project management, marketing and communications skills, and it requires a highly motivated, flexible self-starter who can successfully work cross-culturally.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Pre-departure training and preparation:
i. Follow up on narrative and financial reports received from partners in the field
ii. Prioritize action items received in reports from prior field interns and coordinate with field partners to plan for and ensure implementation
b. Support credit and savings promoters, operations and finance managers as well as the CEO in their daily tasks:
i. With credit promoter: help promote micro credit in new communities, analyse new applicants’ situations, create loan dossiers, provide financial training to beneficiaries, perform monitoring visits to beneficiaries, follow-up on unpaid loans
ii. With savings promoter: help promote and collect savings among saving groups or individuals
iii. With operations manager: help monitor loan portfolio statuses (new/unpaid/potential loans, financial performance indicators), monitor savings situations, check and approve the dossiers of new loan applicants, liaise with the CEO on any operations-related matters and attend credit committee meetings
iv. With finance manager: help keep the accountancy up-to-date, manage cash levels (relations with the bank, the cashier, etc.), prepare monthly/quarterly financial reports (P&L, financial indicators, etc.), advise the CEO on any finance-related matters (or “aspects of…”)
v. With the CEO: accompany him on visits to potential partners or/and other stakeholders (village major, service providers, etc.); attend board meetings
c. Responsible for specific tasks within the operations or financial team depending on candidate background and availability and on project needs (to be defined on a case-by-case basis): development of a marketing strategy, carrying out research/analysis on social impact of the partner’s work, carrying out research/analysis on partner’s inefficiencies and ways to solve them, providing training on financial management/ office tools/ strategic planning, carrying out analysis of partner’s competitor and preparing plan to differentiate partner’s activities, etc.
d. Collect audio-visual materials and testimonies of beneficiaries and partner’s staff
e. Perform an informal audit on the partner’s processes (based on available situation reports and following-up on recommendations previously issued) and issue recommendations
f. Other tasks as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· French fluency or C1-2 level competence
· Some knowledge or experience in finance
· Ability to work independently and to be proactive
· Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
· Ability to identify needs and priorities and respond accordingly
· Capacity to work successfully across cultures
· Willingness to live in basic living conditions

Senior Technical Specialist – Value Chain Development (based in Dar)

Location: Dar es Salaam Tanzania

Job summary

Reporting to the Africa Director, the Senior Technical Specialist is responsible for delivery of the organization’s program work in the country, management of partners and donor relationships, financial and grant management, research and communication, monitoring and evaluation.

This position will directly manage and mentor senior managers and field managers for our field-based operations and promote measurable economic impact, financial sustainability and desired outcomes of our programs. This position will also foster and maintain strategic relationships with local, regional and international partners.

Roles & Responsibility
• Provide technical support on smallholder livelihood and economic development

• Provide leadership in the programmes in development of commercialization and marketing strategies, work plans, budgets and monitoring & evaluation.

Job Summary

The GIS Specialist will work with related software and programs to create and maintain data and/or maps that can be combined with geographically referenced data. He / she should have the capacity to relate different types of data such as socioeconomic, demographic, administrative or political boundaries, land use, land cover, environmental, infrastructure, and transportation networks.

Roles & Responsibility

Create maps and graphs, using GIS software and related equipment.

Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, required outputs, or to develop applications.

Conduct Research to locate and obtain existing databases.

Gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data from staff and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS.

Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.

Design and update database, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature representations.

Enter new map data through use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using

The UN Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA) was established within the Office of Administration of Justice as of 1 July 2009.
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.
Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.
ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
This internship is located within the Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA) in the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The intern reports directly to the Legal Officer.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
2. Be computer literate in standard software applications;
3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Research Intern - West Africa Civil Society Institute

Established by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa in 2005, the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is a regional non-governmental organisation dedicated to enhancing the capacities of civil society organisations in West Africa toward greater sustainability and operational and development effectiveness.
In response to an identified need for structured practical capacity enhancement for young West Africans, WACSI introduced a Next Generation Internship Programme (NGIP) in January 2008 aimed at developing the next generation of African scholars and practitioners. The programme primarily targets young West Africans, either fresh graduates or early career professionals, seeking work experience in WACSI’s core areas of work. Interns are expected to commit to WACSI for six months during which time they will be fully involved in all WACSI activities and enhance their knowledge and capacities for leadership, knowledge and programme management, and critical development issues for West Africa, among other areas.
As part of the NGIP, WACSI is seeking an intern to join its Research and Documentation Unit from November 2014 through April 2015. The intern will be primarily attached to the research unit but may be required to assist other units as needed.
Responsibilities:
Conduct and support background research on topical issues.
Contribute to and compile the weekly Civil Society Situation Report.
Compile and manage information for the Civil Society Knowledge Hub.
Support editing and review of manuscripts for publication.
Assist with the preparation and administration of relevant WACSI programmes and with report writing.
Attend and represent WACSI at meetings with partner organisations.
Any other duties that may be assigned. 
Relevant skills: 
Minimum of a first degree in civil society management/nonprofit studies, philanthropy, international affairs, political science, public policy, law or related fields. 
Commitment to WACSI’s vision and values and demonstrated interest in civil society.
Strong research, writing and communication (verbal and written) skills. 
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong Internet research skills.
Fully bilingual (French and English).
