Head of Human Resources and Corporate Operations

The Global Crop Diversity Trust is an international organization with Headquarters in Bonn, Germany whose mission is to ensure the conservation and availability of crop diversity for food security worldwide. The Global Crop Diversity Trust is seeking candidates for the position of:
Head of Human Resources and Corporate Operations
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Head of Human Resources and Corporate Operations is responsible for setting strategic human resource and administrative direction and for ensuring that the office is operationally efficient and effective. The Head will develop a thorough understanding of the Organization’s requirements regarding human resources, administrative functions and physical facility needs. He/She will partner with other executive management to identify talent gaps and address the operational needs of teams across the organization. The Head is responsible for full, accurate and equitable administration of all compensation and benefits and will be directly responsible for monitoring the day-to-day work of the Corporate Operations Team and staff charged with organizational information systems. He/she will oversee relations with German authorities on a range of administrative and hosting matters. As a member of a small team, the Head will contribute at both hands-on and strategic levels in the full arange of HR and operational activities. The specific responsibilities of the position are as follows:
  • Contribute to the corporate management of the Organization through the development and implementation of the Organization’s strategy, program, policies and procedures;
  • Serve on the Senior Management Team of the Organization;
  • Ensure consistency of HR practices and compliance with policies and any relevant employment related laws and provide guidance and direction to management and staff on HR-related topics;
  • Manage and oversee processes for recruitment, probation, termination, performance assessment and staff development and handle administration of staff compensation and benefits;
  • Oversee the provision of the Organization’s travel and administration and effectively interface with staff at all levels to coordinate all office management activities;
  • Oversee the managenent of the Organization’s ICT and secure a functional organizational knowledge management system
  • Develop human resources financial strategies by estimating, forecasting, and anticipating requirements, trends, and variances; aligning monetary resources; developing action plans; measuring and analyzing results; initiating corrective actions; minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Set, manage and monitor realistic budgets for personnel, administrative services and general headquarters expenditures;
  • Oversee relations with German authorities on protocol issues and liaise with UN and other international organizations on various administrative issues;
  • Oversee Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues and ensure appropriate insurances are in place;
  • Motivate staff and foster collaboration, teamwork and a client service approach among team members;
  • Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • University degree in Human Resources or related field (e.g. Organizational Development,  Business Administration, etc.);
  • 10 years of relevant professional experience in a not-for-profit or international environment  and with at least 5 years of hands-on HR generalist experience and 3-5 years in administrative services roles; at least 3-5 years of supervisory experience;
  • Broad knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, benefits administration, organizational planning and development, employee relations, safety, training and development and office administration;
  • Demonstrated management and coordination skills to plan, direct, control and implement policies and procedures/compliance;
  • Superior interpersonal and coaching skills including patience and ability to work well with staff at all levels;
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality;
  • Previous participation in executive management teams that provide leadership and strategic direction;
  • Previous experience as a budget holder with responsibility for budget planning and expense monitoring/management and high degree of numerical competence and accuracy;
  • Excellent skills with Excel and good computer skills in other MS Office applications; experience with HR information system desirable;
  • Experience and knowledge in managing ICT systems
  • Must be efficient, well-organized high energy, comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities;
  • Excellent analytical skills and good reasoning abilities and sound judgment;
  • Excellent English written and spoken required; knowledge of German will be an advantage but is not required;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to interact effectively with a wide range of collaborators from different cultural backgrounds.
Terms and Conditions: The Crop Trust offers an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary, non-contributory retirement savings plan, medical insurance and leave provisions. This is a Professional position classified as Level 5, with Level 6 being the highest. The salary range for Level 5 starts at Euro 90,000. All benefits are denominated and paid in Euros. Staff of the Global Crop Diversity Trust (including German nationals) are exempt from host country income tax. Relocation costs are covered for candidates residing outside of the Bonn/Cologne or surrounding areas. The initial contract will be for a period of 3 years, subject to a probationary period of 12 months.
