THE PGA ICC AND DEATH PENALTY CAMPAIGNS
Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) is a network of more than 1150 parliamentarians from 142 countries around the world who use their legislative and political prerogatives for the solution of global problems and to undertake specific actions and international initiatives with the support of PGA’s secretariat. PGA works on an expanded list of global issues such as fostering democracy, conflict prevention and management, international law and human rights, population and sustainable development.
Since 1989, under the umbrella of the International Law and Human Rights Programme, the PGA Campaign for the Universality and Effectiveness of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (PGA ICC Campaign)has contributed to the ratification of 76 of 123 States Parties to the Rome Statute to the International Criminal Court (ICC), as well as to the domestic implementation of the Rome Statute into national legislation in 32 countries. PGA is widely recognized as the parliamentary network working on international justice and the ICC.
Since 2014, PGA has launched a Parliamentary platform against the death penalty which aims to support, enhance and maximize the impact of the individual initiatives of parliamentarians worldwide on the abolition of the death penalty, as well as to launch and coordinate targeted campaigns in selected countries to ensure concrete advancement of the abolition processes.
The PGA Secretariat operates from both the Headquarters in New York and the office in The Hague.
POSITION: INTERN FOR THE INTERNATIONAL LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS PROGRAMME, Winter/Spring 2016
Parliamentarians for Global Action is recruiting a French-speaking Intern for its Hague-based office:The intern will work under the supervision of the Campaign Manager of the Death Penalty Platform/Senior ICC Programme officer.
The intern will be involved in administrative, logistic, and research activities, including providing support in the organization of meetings and events to be held in The Hague and worldwide. The intern will support the team in collecting and organizing information on stakeholders and political developments in different regions of the world, and establishing and maintaining communication with PGA member parliamentarians on behalf of the PGA Secretariat. In addition, the intern will support the administration of the Campaigns' database of contacts and outreach tools.
Through this internship the selected candidates will acquire programme management capabilities, advocacy and legal skills, and will have the opportunity of contributing directly to the universality and effectiveness of the Rome Statute and the abolition of the death penalty. The intern will have the opportunity to establish direct substantive contact with politicians, international organisations and courts based in The Hague and human rights activists worldwide.
The internship will begin end of January/beginning February and will last 4 months. The internship comprises 35 hours of work per week. Due to lack of funds, this internship is unpaid.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
⁃ Minimum undergraduate studies;
⁃ Proficiency in English and French (mother tongue or fluency acquired otherwise).
⁃ Excellent written and oral communication, research and writing skills;
⁃ Advanced computer skills (notably in database management, excel and text processor);
⁃ Proven ability to work in teams, as well as independently and within the constraints of tight deadlines;
⁃ Proven ability to take initiatives when needed;
⁃ Proven flexibility and adaptability to horizontal structures;
⁃ Commitment towards social justice and the rule of law; and
⁃ Interest in political processes and the role of individuals to generate political will and transform it in concrete actions.
DESIRED COMPETENCIES
⁃ Exposure to international criminal, human rights and international law
⁃ Previous exposure to the International Criminal Court system;
⁃ Exposure to international organizations;
⁃ Policy research and analysis, stakeholder identification, knowledge of international system;
⁃ Event management, customer service, logistical support; AND
⁃ Desired additional language business proficiency in Dutch, Spanish, Arabic or Russian.
The successful applicants will need to have the right to reside in The Netherlands for the duration of the internship and will be required to provide proof of health insurance. PGA cannot assist in immigration or any other application process. PGA cannot make any financial contributions to relocating to The Netherlands.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Short-listed candidates will be invited to take part in a test of competencies and a phone interview on the week of 11 January. Thereafter, the internship would start in January, in consultation with the selected candidate.
