Liberia: Media Association Capacity Development Expert

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Internews, an international non-profit organization that empowers media worldwide to give people news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard, is implementing a USAID-funded Liberia Media Development (LMD) Program in Liberia. The Liberia Media Development’s goal is to increase all Liberian citizens’ access to independent and reliable information and empowerment to engage in well-informed public discussion of important issues of the day.
In order to strengthen sustainability of the Liberian media sector, Internews is currently looking for a qualified and motivated international Media Association Capacity Development Expert who will work, on a short-term basis, with media sector support organizations in Liberia.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Introduce concepts of nonprofit management and governance, planning and strategy to LMD partner media associations; Adapt/design and incorporate strategies to best suit their needs and the Liberian context;
  • Mentor, advise and support the development of the LMD partner media association directors in the roles and responsibilities of day-to-day management, long-term strategy and planning, supervision and development of senior management team, and development of new strategic business units and ventures;
  • Work with organization leadership to explore avenues for revenue generation and financial sustainability, consisting of a mix of training activities, onsite coaching and mentoring, methods and methodologies for the production of annual business plans by trained media personnel;
  • Assist LMD partner media associations conduct a self-assessment evaluation and craft an Action Implementation Plan that identifies priority needs, steps, responsible personnel, deadlines, and any additional needed support.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values
  • Undertake any other duties or activities required by Internews in Liberia’s Country Director, Deputy Chief of Party, the Regional Director for Sub Saharan Africa, or the Business Manager for Sub Saharan and East and Northern Africa.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous experience working with building media association capacity in a developing context, preferably in West Africa;
  • Minimum education level: BBA, Bcom B.Sc. in Marketing;
  • Knowledge of USAID rules and regulations.
  • Excellent knowledge of capacity building of organization and staff.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of strategic planning in an organizational capacity-building context.
  • Prior experience in West or Sub-Saharan Africa, preferably in Anglophone countries;
