The Department of African Studies and Anthropology (DASA) is looking to replace and extend its research and teaching expertise in the fields of social and cultural Anthropology.  Candidates with expertise in any region of sub-Saharan Africa or its diasporas may apply. Both positions are open-ended.
Teaching
DASA attracts highly motivated and able students. The new appointments will be expected to consolidate and expand our teaching provision, by delivering core undergraduate Anthropology modules (such as Theory, Ethnography and Research) and by developing new optional modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to reflect research specialisms in any of the following areas: performance, media and popular culture; anthropological approaches to texts (oral and written, in African or European languages); religion and ritual; identities and inequalities; migration, livelihoods and work; money values; gender and development.
Administration
The successful candidates will also be expected to participate fully in the administration of teaching, by promoting and assuming leadership of our Joint Honours undergraduate Anthropology programme and/or our postgraduate programmes (depending on their specialisms).
Research
DASA is a highly successful research unit.  The new appointments will be expected to participate in our monthly postgraduate research training workshop and the weekly Africa Talks programme; to attract postgraduate and other researchers to the department; and to contribute to our research environment, outputs and/or impact for REF 2020.
There are opportunities in DASA and the School of History and Cultures with respect to:
Research:
  • consolidating and expanding  existing research interests  both individually and with colleagues, with a view to the publication of high-quality research and, in due course, the development of grant proposals
  • attracting doctoral researchers to join our vibrant community and to participate in the monthly postgraduate research training workshop and the weekly programme of Africa Talks
  • initiating  and participating in multi-/inter-disciplinary activities with colleagues in DASA, the School of History and Cultures, and other areas of the University (such as the College of Social Sciences and the International Development Department)
Teaching:

Administration and Career development:
  • participation in the organisation and management of a varied and dynamic department in one of Britain’s largest redbricks
  • development of administrative and organisational skills in professional terms
