Economist and Senior Economist

Who we are
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is the rule maker for Australia's energy markets. We also provide strategic and policy advice to Australia's energy ministers through the COAG Energy Council.
We are currently seeking a Senior Economist and an Economist and to join our Strategy & Economic Analysis team.  This group is responsible for ensuring high quality economic analysis to support the Commission's rule making and for providing intellectual leadership on key strategic issues and challenges for the Commission.  
Senior Economist
Your responsibilities in this broad and challenging role will include:
  • Leading teams of Economists and advisory staff to develop rigorous economic analysis in support of rule changes and reviews
  • Ensuring consistency of economic analysis and reasoning in policy development;
  • Providing expert advice to the Commission on economic materials (drafts, reports or submissions) presented by external stakeholders;
  • Communicating complex issues or concepts in a way that is accessible to a wide range of stakeholders; and
  • Contributing to organisational planning and strategic direction.
We are looking for candidates with:
  • 8+ years experience in a related policy, commercial, or regulatory role involving the application of economic concepts and analysis;
  • An in-depth understanding of market development, competition and regulation in energy and/or similar markets;
  • Demonstrated strategic decision making ability, flexibility and foresight with proven ability to work autonomously under minimal supervision;
  • Strong team building and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to explain economic concepts to non-technical audience in ways which are easy to understand; and
  • Tertiary qualifications in microeconomics or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of gas and/or electricity markets in Australia would be an advantage
Economist
Your main responsibilities in this challenging role will include:
  • Providing economic input to rule changes and reviews to ensure the consistency of economic analysis and reasoning in all areas of Commission decision making;
  • Contributing to the development of analytical frameworks and models that apply advanced economic concepts and analyses to decision-making process;
  • Facilitating knowledge transfer and promoting an understanding of economic concepts in relation to the energy market operation; and
We are looking for candidates with:
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain economic concepts to non-technical audiences;
  • The ability to work autonomously with a proactive approach and strong interpersonal skills necessary to work in a calm and measured way in challenging, and at times pressured situations;
  • Tertiary qualifications in economics, commerce and/or other relevant disciplines;
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a policy, research and/or regulatory role involving the application of economic concepts and analysis to decision-making processes;
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, including quantitative skills and the proven ability to understand complex subject matters quickly; and
  • Knowledge of gas and/or electricity markets in Australia would be an advantage
