Duration: 6 - 12 months

Asossa Hospital (serving more than 500,000 people) experiences a critical shortage of skilled health professionals (midwives, doctors, pediatricians and obstetricians), lack of experience and skills of the existing health professionals, inconsistent use of partographs for delivery services and overall inefficient management capacity to provide comprehensive emergency obstetric care services.

Objectives and responsibilities:
  • Oversee patient care in clinical areas by working alongside colleague doctors, midwives and nurses, building the capacity to deliver effective maternal and newborn health services.
  • Provide technical/clinical support that improves the service at GYN/OBY department
  • Train local staff in provision of comprehensive emergency obstetric care through on the job training, formal training and mentoring
  • Assess Gynecological elective cases for surgical intervention and carry out surgical support
  • Supervising/mentoring students, junior staff and health officers as well as in internal examination assessment.
  • Support the facilities in setting up of key maternal health interventions including maternity waiting homes and introduction of magnesium sulphate,
  • Support the development of standards and procedures for handling pregnant women in maternity waiting homes
  • Improve proper Infection control chain in maternity and labor ward.
  • Develop Emergency protocols for Proper handling of Maternal emergencies
  • Develop performance indicators for In-service staff and trainees to guide qualitative service delivery in place of placement.
  • Provide support to the other hospital in this cluster: Pawe General Hospital.
