The Professor/Associate Professor provides the Africa Center for Strategic Studies with expertise on African security issues, as well as U.S. policy towards Africa. He/she is knowledgeable about: the multidisciplinary nature of insecurity in Africa; the nature, scope and trends relating to Africa’s security sector; comparative African politics; rule of law and justice sector reform; security sector reform; peacekeeping and crisis response; civil-military relations in Africa; and national/regional strategies to enhance security outcomes across the continent. He/she is also familiar with U.S. policy towards Africa especially in relation to security assistance, foreign assistance, development assistance and the key pillars of U.S.-Africa policy. The Professor/Associate Professor is responsible for: developing curriculum for academic programs; organizing courses, seminars and workshops for senior security sector officials; representing the Africa Center in scholarly and policy events; and producing research products in support of Africa Center programs.
Major duties include:
The incumbent prepares and oversees assigned academic programs, responsible for researching, planning and writing syllabus for assigned academic programs, serves as advisor to individual participants or groups of participants during academic programs, conducts professional research on African security matters in support of curriculum preparation, and contributes original research to the Africa Center research and publications program, and maintains a professional network and represents ACSS at conferences, functions, and events.
Qualifications:
Required
- A PhD in an appropriate field of study required
- A minimum of 10 years relevant university-level experience or equivalent level experience in executive-education programs or think-tanks
- A minimum of 5 years practical experience working on the African continent
- A demonstrable familiarity with African security issues
- A successful record of scholarship and outreach
Preferred
- Fluency in French, Portuguese or Arabic
- Experience in policy development with governmental and/or non-governmental organizations
- Established record of scholarship and research experience in the areas of justice sector reform and/or security sector reform
- Established record of scholarship and research experience in the area of peacekeeping and conflict management

The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) is an academic institution within the U. S. Department of Defense established in 1999 and funded by Congress for the study of security issues relating to Africa. The Africa Center serves as a forum for bilateral and multilateral research, communication, and exchange of ideas involving military and civilian participants. The Africa Center does this by expanding understanding of African security issues, providing a trusted platform for dialogue, building enduring partnerships, and catalyzing strategic solutions. The overarching goal is to support processes that foster security for all Africans championed by effective institutions accountable to their citizens. Africa Center programs revolve around the generation and dissemination of knowledge through its research, academic programs, and community engagement. Although headquartered in Washington, D.C. on the campus of the National Defense University, the Africa Center holds many of its seminars on the African continent. Faculty members are hired for an initial term of three years, with a one year probationary period. Upon satisfactory completion of the first year, the term will be extended for an additional two years.
