Senior Legal Counsel Africa
The role
The Senior Legal Counsel, Africa, shall be responsible for managing legal support and risk on behalf of the Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology Business Area's (BA) Southern Africa, Central Africa and Western Africa Sales Areas. As part of this responsibility, he/she will implement proper policies and procedure for legal risk management in the Sales Areas, aligned with global BA and Group Policies and Procedures.
The Senior Legal Counsel will play an important part in both the BA Legal Function and the Sales Area management teams with a particular focus on (i) continuing current initiatives to develop global sales templates, training and processes to complement the Global Sales Commercial Approval System; (ii) advising on material Sales and Purchase Agreements; (iii) managing disputes and external counsel; (iv) ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Key Performance Areas
- To understand key strategic and commercial drivers for the Sales Areas and the legal issues ffecting the organization
- To gain the confidence and respect of senior management and provide commercially focused advice with integrity and insight.
- To ensure regular communication on opportunities, risks and relevant regulatory and compliance issues across the organization by developing effective internal and external relationships within the BA and in the Group Legal Function.
- To provide confidence in the quality and effectiveness of services provided by the Legal Support Function to ensure that legal advice is sought proactively at all appropriate stages.
- To provide an optimal balance of internal and external resources which consistently delivers a superior result, recognised by the business as making a direct contribution to the success of their operations
- To communicate effectively with the business leaders and corporate management throughout Sandvik in a manner that engenders trust and confidence.
Your profile
- Degree in law (LLB or equivalent).
- A good undergraduate degree as well as the appropriate legal qualifications in one or more African/international jurisdictions
- Substantial relevant experience gained within a top tier law firm and/or an in-house Legal function of a multinational company.
- Experience in the mining, construction and/or manufacturing sectors will be considered favorably, although candidates from other relevant industries will be considered.
- A proven track record of successfully advising a significant corporation, at both mid and senior levels, on a wide range of legal issues.
- Proven delivery of pragmatic solutions to legal matters and problems.
- In addition to first class technical legal skills, the successful candidate will possess strong business acumen and judgment, being able to effectively switch between the roles of legal and commercial advisor.
