Purpose of the Position
Under the general guidance of the Senior Advisor, Global Philanthropy, the incumbent will be responsible for securing, managing, developing, coordinating, negotiating and monitoring partnerships with foundations and other institutions, such as NGOs, with a primary focus on private foundations. Responsibilities will also include guiding regional and country offices as well as National Committees in the development of strategies for mobilizing resources, devising engagement plans, and building successful partnerships with these private sector partners.
Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks
  • Strategic framework for foundations: Work with Senior Advisor, Global Philanthropy and colleagues from the Global Philanthropy team to develop, implement and monitor strategy plan for engaging with foundations. Tasks include obtaining buy-in from senior leadership and colleagues at HQ, regional/country offices and National Committees.
  • New partnerships: Identify and prioritize prospective partners, obtain buy-in within UNICEF family (HQ, regional/country offices and National Committees) on partnership-specific and foundation community-wide approaches, and increase number and quality of partnerships.
  • Existing partnership: Strengthen, deepen and maintain existing foundation partnerships, including developing and executing partner-specific engagement plans, establishing and maintaining information flows, reviewing and assessing existing partnerships, and renewing partnerships and collaborations.
  • International coordination and information flows: Ensure that vertical coordination and information flows around specific foundation interactions are established and followed up with Office of the Executive Director and UNICEF senior leadership. Also put in place and monitor mechanisms to ensure horizontal coordination and information flows among HQ Divisions, regional/country offices and National Committees around specific foundation interactions.
  • Capacity building: Work with National Committees, HQ and regional/country office colleagues to increase knowledge of foundation community and how to increase skills for engaging with foundations. Provide guidance in developing, negotiating and implementing partnerships with the foundation community in line with UNICEF policies and guidelines.
  • General foundation/NGO support: Facilitate interactions with private sector partners, respond to UNICEF and National Committee queries on private sector issues, and facilitate grant making from 'Other NGOs'.
  • Business analysis: Undertake and support financial analyses of foundation income, including projections and actuals, inform market-specific financial analyses and opportunities, and provide inputs on pertinent trends and influences on the foundation sector.
  • Institutional priorities: Remain informed of key institutional priorities in order to position the Global Philanthropy team to proactively engage with existing and potential partners around such priorities.
  • Qualifications of Successful Candidate
  • Advanced university degree in international development, public administration, business management, communication, or a related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of experience in partnership development may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Eight years progressively responsible professional work experience in a combination of the following: private foundations and/or other public or private grant-making bodies or organizations, partnership development, programming, communications, and project management. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in direct relationship cultivation and management of high value partnerships.
  • Familiarity with UNICEF programmes is highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of an additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset.
