Deputy Director - International Advocacy

by Unknown  |  at  1:24 AM

For the past 50 years Amnesty International (AI) has brought people together to fight for human rights. We've lobbied, protested and mobilised all over the world for human rights impact. We have been critical to the development of international standards through our engagement with the United Nations and regional human rights bodies.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the management team in leading the advocacy program responsible for Amnesty International work at the UN and regional human rights bodies. The work of the program ranges from leading in the provision of submissions to the Universal Periodic Review, lobbying the UN Security Council, to strengthening coherence in the advocacy that we carry out through regional organisations and emerging powers.
You will manage a team of advocates in our London and Geneva offices and will work with our staff in Amnesty International chapters around the world. You are a strategic thinker with strong interpersonal skills, an excellent communicator and a committed manager. You thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing demands; you enjoy giving strategic and political advice while overseeing staff performance; and are able to reframe arguments in ways that make governments question their conventional wisdom.
Your work will centre on working closely with the Director of International Advocacy to build and improve our capacity to have a positive impact for human rights. Under the authority of the Senior Director for International Law and Policy, you will help AI maintain its leadership role in promoting human rights at intergovernmental forums and around the capitals of the world.
ABOUT YOU:
Dynamic, results-driven and an expert in designing and implementing advocacy strategies, you are an experienced leader and team player with a proven ability to develop and implement innovative strategies, plans and communications at the local and global level. Probably from an NGO background, you will also be comfortable dealing with high level government officials. Passionate about human rights you will understand the dynamics of social change. You will have the skills for, and commitment to, the management of staff in multi-cultural, multi-lingual environments, and in remote locations. ABOUT US:
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We reach almost every country in the world and have:
  • more than 2 million members and supporters who drive forward our fight for rights
  • more than 5 million activists who strengthen our calls for justice
Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, fairness, freedom and truth wherever they're denied. And whether we're applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we're all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
At Amnesty International, we are passionate about what we do and we are proud of our achievements as a movement. To compensate our employees for the wonderful work they do, we reward them through a combination of an attractive and sector competitive salary and benefits package, high levels of engagement and involvement, and a commitment to employee development.
Benefits include 37 days annual leave (inclusive of public holidays and grace days), pension scheme, employee assistance programme, life assurance and many more benefits designed to suit your own personal lifestyle. All of this, in a professional, engaging environment.
