Volunteer Legal Advisor, Refugee Legal Aid Project

The Refugee Legal Aid Project (RLAP) provides information, counseling, referral, representation, and advocacy for asylum-seekers and refugees in Egypt through the Refugee Status Determination (RSD) and resettlement processes.

Each year, RLAP offers several unpaid legal internships for qualified candidates who can join us for at least six months. Volunteer terms begin in January and July. The next cohort of VLAs will begin mid-January 2015 and commit to RLAP through July 2015.

VLAs work under the supervision of RLAP's legal staff. They conduct intake and follow-up interviews with clients, apply refugee law and policy to clients' cases, and prepare written submissions for the UNHCR, the IOM, and other national immigration authorities as appropriate.

VLAs receive training, instruction, and guidance from RLAP staff. Working independently and taking initiative are necessary skills for VLAs. Qualified volunteers will:

• Attend a one-week training session prior to the beginning of their internships
• Work at least 20 hours a week and for a minimum of six months
• Have an interest in international law and refugee issues
• Be flexible and sympathetic to cultural expectations
• Have strong research skills
• Work independently and take initiative
• Write effectively and persuasively
• Work with maturity and professionalism in stressful situations and with emotionally-difficult subject matter
• Write and speak English fluently
• Have their own laptop computers with Microsoft Office

Desired qualifications include:

• Experience with legal analysis (such as law students or graduate students in a relevant field)
• Previous experience working with refugees
• Previous experience living/working in the Middle East and Cairo
• Social work, psychosocial training, or other experience working with vulnerable groups, particularly survivors of violence, torture, trafficking, or SGBV
• Communication skills in Arabic, Oromo, Amharic, Tigrinya, or Somali

Role overview

The Purpose of this job is to support KULIMA in the implementation of the PRONEA Support Project through training, coaching and mentoring extension officers (from the Government and Private/NGO service providers) in 4 districts of Manica Province (Sussundenga, Bárue, Manica and Gondola) to improve their service delivery capacity. As an advisor you will train, coach and mentor extension officers and lead farmers on participatory training and extension approaches. You'll plan and develop specific manuals for each subject that will be addressed for the development and sustainability of service providers under. You'll facilitate the mobilization and strengthening of associations of lead farmers (e.g. Poultry Vaccinators, Community Animal Health Workers). You'll train extension service providers on extension service organization provision; and participate and or facilitate the organization of district and provincial level steering committees and stakeholder meetings. In this assignment, you will work with KULIMA's extension coordinator and you'll support 12 field extension officers. You will also work through the 50 public and private extension officers which you will be entitled to coach and train.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

Applicants to this position should hold a masters degree in Agriculture, Extension, or related field. We'll also consider bachelor degree holders in a relevant fiels with at least 10 years of experience. Portuguese proficiency or willingness to learn Portuguese is also essential You'll have at least 5 years of experience on participatory training and extension approaches, techniques and methods. You're computer literate and some experience or knowledge of project management is desirable.

You will be required to ride a motorbike during your placement, consequently, a motorbike license will be essential and training will be provided if required. Additionally, during the course of this placement, you will be required to share the house with other volunteers. Funding for this placement has not been secured yet at the moment but is very likely to get secured very soon. Therefore, the final decision on this placement will depend on the approval of the project.

Role overview

For our Health Program in Ethiopia we are currently recruiting a paediatrician for Alamata Hospital. As a paediatrician you'll be sharing skills and knowledge with staff in the paediatrics department and providing clinical services in the hospital. Your job will be to perform medical examinations, diagnose, prescribe medicine and treatment. You'll also audit neonatal and paediatric morbidity. You'll manage medical documentation and advise how to improve the information system in place. During medical conferences you'll address complicated paediatric cases. You'll help set up a neonatal unit in the hospital. All this in a setting with limited resources, but also with the opportunity to gain experience with different patterns of diseases.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

Essential: You will have a Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) and a minimum of 3 years specialist experience in paediatrics (in the UK completed ST5 at time of departure). Desirable: Prior experience in clinical teaching in the area of paediatric care is desirable. It would be preferable for the candidate to be able to commit to a six month placement; however there is flexibility with the length of placement to be as short as three months.

Quiha is a town located in northern Ethiopia, Tigray region. It lies 9 km east of Mekelle, 2250 m above sea level. There is access for internet and mobile service. The hospital will provide shared office space, and basic office furniture and stationeries. It is advisable to come with your own laptop. The official regional language is ‘Tigrian’ while the national language is ‘Amharic’. The students and speak and understand English without any difficulty. When dealing with patients, the volunteer shall be assisted by a translator (staff on duty).

For our Health Program in Ethiopia we are currently recruiting a paediatric nurse for Yirgalem Hospital. As a nurse you'll be sharing skills and knowledge with staff in the paediatrics department and providing clinical services in the hospital. Your job will be to engage in the routine care and management of neonates. You'll advise and assist on the implementation of a NICU. You'll prepare seminars in neonatal care and present cases to nurses and doctors. You'll organise teaching session’s in particular for neonatal resuscitation training for midwives and nursing staff. You'll introduce systems that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of neonatal care in delivering quality service. All this in a setting with limited resources, but also with the opportunity to gain experience with different patterns of diseases.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

You have a bachelor degree in Nursing. You have at least 5 years experience as Neonatal Nurse in hospital setting. You have experience in monitoring and training nurses on the job in a hospital. You're computer literate and have basic experience with hospital administration systems. Additional specializaion in neonatal care is desirable, though not mandatory. You consider working in an enviroment with limited financial resources and staff as a challenge and you're willing to be creative and flexible in working schedule. You have good communications and management skills. You are willing to commit for at least 12 months, but we are flexible to 6 months Placements

You have at least 5 years teaching experience in a primary school, with specialization in literacy or numeracy. You can prove experience of sharing learning with others. You have knowledge of effective literacy (in particular reading) instructional methods, and experience in making your own teaching aids. You're able to conduct a needs analysis and monitor and evaluate. French language skills would be beneficial, but are not essential.

For this job you'll need to travel by motorbike, either driving a motorbike or riding as a passenger. Roads can be rough, particularly during and after rain. For this reasons, a certain level of physical fitness and ability to cope with these conditions is necessary. You need to be willing to share accommodation with other volunteers.

Volunteer Health Financing Analyst

The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) works in partnership with country governments, partners, and other major stakeholders to identify the key obstacles to access and scale-up of essential health services, and to develop and implement sustainable strategies to overcome them. Given the current global funding landscape, CHAI is focused on providing technical support to governments in overcoming financing barriers to achieve universal access to health services.

Summary of Position: CHAI is looking for a Volunteer Health Financing Analyst to support Swaziland’s Ministry of Health (MoH) to identify opportunities for efficiency gains and optimize use of existing health resources. CHAI’s Health Financing Program works closely with the government to develop and execute health financing strategies to maximize effectiveness of resources and to identify innovative opportunities to mobilise efforts that ensure long-term sustainability and growth. The Health Financing team aims to implement effective financial management protocols by identifying inefficiencies within the current system and by improving resource allocations and utilisation.

The Analyst will provide critical support in the quantification and mapping of funding needs with current resources, assess feasibility options of potential financing sources, and facilitate discussions to identify opportunities that have high-impact on improved health outcomes. The Analyst will be a part of a team that works very closely with the MoH, and interacts on a regular basis with donors, NGOs and civil societies with the goal to strengthen the overall health sector. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with governments to develop critical skillsets, tools, and the capacity to enable better management and use of resources in health.

Job Requirements

Provide robust data management and analytical support to the in-country team by actively participating in structuring the analytical approach and problem-solving in areas such as:

• Developing quantitative models to understand resource needs of key health interventions at national and facility levels;
• Understanding funding flows in the health sector to identify potential areas of inefficiencies and opportunities for innovative financing, but to also project future trends;
• Modeling to assess potential for improved efficiency and effectiveness of health sector interventions;
• Working with the government throughout planning and implementation phases to ensure skills transfer and government ownership, and provide technical support as needed; and
• Supporting the design and implementation of long-term financial sustainability plans
