ASSISTANT PROJECT OFFICER (GEC)

Background: I Choose Life – Africa (ICL) is one of the leading Non-Governmental Organizations that has contributed greatly to Sexual Reproductive Health efforts among the youth in Kenya today. The organization works closely with the government, universities, communities and has programs in over 210 institutions (tertiary institutions and high schools) across 16 Counties in Kenya and reaches over 1 million youth annually with behavior change communication messages.
Vision & Mission: ICL's vision is to see a ‘Healthy Africa, Empowered People!’ The organization seeks to support to the implementation of Vision 2030 through the cascading it to the Counties. ICL's mission is to create a movement of individuals that enhance the quality of life for communities through Health initiatives, Economic empowerment, Academic & Career mentoring, improved Leadership & governance and Institution Strengthening (HEAL&I).
Job purpose
To increase the life chances of marginalized girls in Mombasa county by increasing enrollment, improving school attendance, retention and learning through an integrated approach. In addition, support counties in the actualization of their county strategic plans aligned to Vision 2030.
Key responsibilities
  1. Project Planning and design
    a. Participate in the development of new project concepts.
    b. Participate in reviewing the targets as set out in the funded proposal
  2. Project implementation and training.
    a. Assist the coordination all project activities including preparation for trainings to various implementation sites
    b. Training and sensitization of community on importance of girl education, nutrition and entrepreneurship
    c. Plan and facilitate peer education and life skills training.
    d. Liaise with project accountant in requesting activity costs
    e. Scheduling activities and meetings with community gate keepers and students.
    f. Plan and Organize career fairs motivational mentoring events
    g. Take part in midline and end line evaluation as advised by the manager
    h. Participate in project, organizational and institutional meetings and work harmoniously with other stakeholders.
    i. Support in project research in collaboration with the project M&E team
  3. Resource Mobilization
    a. Take part in resource mobilization through participation in proposal development with other program staff
    b. Design, implement and evaluate projects with an aspect of resource mobilization.
  4. Project Monitoring& Evaluation
    a. Compile accurate activity reports submit them to the Project Officer M & E in set deadlines
    b. Track student attendance in schools
    c. Keep records for data collected and reported.
    d. Ensure evaluations of trainings and outreach activities are conducted and reports written and submitted to the project manager/monitoring and evaluation officer.
Education
a) A Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences preferably in Education
b) Diploma in project management will be an added advantage
c) Member of the TSC.
Experience and Abilities
a) A minimum of two years training experience in a youth setting on aspects of Education, Empowerment or behavior change in a project setting.
b) Experience in working with tertiary institutions an added advantage.
c) Ability to work with a team, foster a team approach and incorporate capacity building activities into the program
d) Ability to analyze and utilize program development gaps for designing Programs.
Knowledge and skills
a. Be an excellent facilitator
b. Experience in implementing donor funded projects is highly desirable preferably DfID or USG
c. Knowledge on programming highly desirable
d. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, a keen eye for details, good presentation and interpersonal skills and excellent report writing skills.
e. People management skills as well as mentorship experience and capability
