The ISS is seeking a researcher to work on a range of issues related to the political and economic situation in Zimbabwe.
The candidate will carry out in-depth field and desktop research, communicate the results through publications, briefings, seminars and media engagements, network with Zimbabwean actors from government, civil society and political parties, and provide policy advice to senior decision makers at a national, regional and international level.
Overview of duties
- Initiate, plan and undertake primary and secondary research, including field research, on political and economic dynamics in Zimbabwe
- Write papers, policy briefs and ISS Today articles
- Assist in organising events
- Disseminate research findings and policy recommendations through briefings, seminars and roundtables
- Work closely with relevant stakeholders
- Contribute to donor reports, budgeting and fundraising for the project
Overview of requirements
- A master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline such as international relations, political science, conflict and peace studies, strategic and security studies, law or a related qualification
- A minimum of seven years’ experience in the field of peace and security in Africa
- Good network of contacts in Zimbabwe and experience interacting with range of actors in Zimbabwe
- Good knowledge of regional dynamics, SADC and South African policy towards Zimbabwe
- Experience of engaging with high-level governmental and non-governmental actors and good networking ability
- Excellent research, writing and verbal communication skills supported by a publications and public speaking record
- Excellent English language skills
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel extensively on the continent and beyond
- Proactive approach to research and writing
The contract will be for one year and may be renewed subject to programme requirements, funding and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.
