Gender-Programme Officer for Guinea-Bissau

Interpeace, an international non-profit organisation, works in close partnership with national partner organizations and the United Nations, with the aim of building lasting peace. Interpeace tailors its approach to each society and ensures that the work is locally driven. Believing that every society has what it needs to build peace, Interpeace supports the active involvement of local, national, and international actors in ongoing inclusive dialogue, collective action and participatory policy research that allows societies facing a risk of violent conflict to overcome its internal divisions. Together with local teams and partners, Interpeace jointly develops peacebuilding programmes and helps establish processes of change that connect local communities, civil society, government and the international community through our Track 6 approach.
Headquartered in Geneva with regional offices in Abidjan, Guatemala City and Nairobi, Interpeace is supported by bilateral and multilateral donors. The organization is currently active in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia.

General duties and responsibilities:
The Gender-Programme Officer for Guinea-Bissau will manage a 18-month programme financed by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund. This project aims to contribute to reducing the exclusion of women from decision-making spheres by strengthening their participation throughout Guinea-Bissau in governance and in the management of local conflicts. The works through national awareness-raising, strengthening of capacities and continuous support of women leaders in political advocacy and the management of local conflicts. The Gender-Programme Officer will be based in Bissau and collaborate very closely together with Interpeace’s national partner Voz di Paz. The main tasks include, budget management, programme strategy development, management of political space, monitoring and evaluation, reporting, capacity building on Gender competency and communications. The Gender-Programme Officer for Guinea-Bissau is responsible to the Director of the Regional Office for West Africa and collaborates closely with the Regional Finance and Administration Manager and the Learning and Inovation Officer. The collaboration with the Interpeace Regional Office for West Africa in Abidjan will be guaranteed through regular communication at a distance (email, telephone etc.) as well as periodical travels to and from Bissau/Abidjan.
Applicants for the position of Gender-Programme Officer in Guinea-Bissau must fulfill all of the following general requirements:
  • Master degree in international relations, peace and conflict studies, security studies, human rights, diplomacy, gender studies, international cooperation, humanitarian aid, communication or related fields
  • Professional proficiency in Portugese (CEFR: C1) or native-speaker (CEFR: C2)
  • Demonstrated interest and experience (e.g. policy brief, analytical publication, academic dissertation, work experience, volunteer engagement) in the gender aspect of peacebuilding, development, humanitarian action or related fields
  • 1-5 years of professional project management experience;
  • Aptitude to adapt to a different context regarding security, culture, climate or health issue, demonstrated by at least 6 months experience outside of country of origin
  • Professional working proficiency (CEFR: C1) in English or French
  • Willingness to travel at least 25% of your time, mostly within the region of West Africa
  • At least 1 year experience in report writing for donors, budget management, relationship building with political and financial partners or directS support to local partners considered as stong assets
  • Demonstrated work experience of at least 1 year in West Africa considered a strong asset
  • Ability to facilitate strategic thinking with colleagues and partners
