Associate General Counsel , International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a nonprofit founded in 1996 to ensure the development of a safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccine for use throughout the world. IAVI’s work on an AIDS vaccine includes:
  • Providing scientific and technical leadership and expertise in vaccine discovery and development,
  • Partnering with academia, industry, and governments to advance promising HIV vaccine candidates into clinical trials,

Position Summary:
 
IAVI has established a Vaccine Product Development Center (VxPDC) as a separate operating unit within the organization.  The VxPDC provides a range of translational development services to HIV vaccine research and development programs. The programs currently include vaccine, antibody and vector mediated delivery approaches to HIV prevention.  The VxPDC services and activities include project management, establishment of target product profiles, regulatory strategy, pre-clinical toxicology, manufacturing, quality assurance, clinical planning and clinical trials.  The programs include academic and industry participants and collaborations, including accessing technologies to help expedite the translational development of candidates. The Associate General Counsel will provide legal support to the full range of program activities across the VxPDC, provide strategic input to management, work closely with the project teams and provide leadership in the identification and resolution of legal issues, structure and negotiate collaborations.  The Associate General Counsel will also work closely with IAVI’s Business Development group to coordinate business development and intellectual property support for the VxPDC.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  •  Provide legal support to IAVI’s VxPDC, including interactions with research laboratories, pre-clinical  and clinical research activities the establishment of vaccine development collaborations, and regulatory and quality activities and functions;
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts with partner organizations (pharma, biotechs, universities, NGOs and governments), and provide business focused legal advice;
  • Coordinate Business Development support and intellectual property management needed for the VxPDC programs;
  • Work with Department heads in ensuring the success of the business and in the support of its translational development activities
  • Manage multiple projects independently. 
Experience and Skills: 
  • JD degree and New York bar admission;
  • Minimum 8+years relevant work experience;
  • Commercial/transactional experience, including contracts and intellectual property issues relating to pre-clinical and clinical research activities and business development activities
  • Strong experience with pharma sector and/or vaccine research and development (i.e., discovery, translational and clinical development), and with FDA regulatory and GxP compliance regulations.  In-house experience for a life sciences organization preferred.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property issues arising from pharma sector and/or vaccine product development
  • Ability to manage complex issues
  • Proactive, action oriented, and collaborative

  • Strong analytical skills
