Head of Region - Middle East, North Africa and West and Central Asia

by Unknown  |  at  10:18 AM

Refusing to ignore people in crisis
As the head of Middle East, North Africa and West and Central Asia (MENA) region, based within the international division at our offices in London, you will manage the British Red Cross support to humanitarian activities across the region through our Red Cross Movement (RCM) partners.
Using your considerable experience of humanitarian and development assistance in MENA, you will lead a team of international and local staff, based in the region and in the UK, to deliver the British Red Cross’s strategy for the region. You will seek to contribute to the development of RCM capacity, whilst maintaining an overview of other humanitarian risks and threats across MENA.
You will support the country teams in developing our current partnerships with Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies in the region (including Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen), seeking to strengthen their capacities to respond to emergencies and to build the resilience of vulnerable communities. You will also explore new opportunities for partnerships in the regions with national societies and with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), particularly during emergency operations.
Reporting to the director of programmes and partnerships, you will work closely with the other heads of region and the head of global emergencies, ensuring consistent approaches to our engagement with RCM partners across the regions. You will also work closely with the director of technical and advisory unit to ensure good practice and effectiveness in all British Red Cross supported programmes.
Whilst ideally you will be familiar with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, for this leadership role, key requirements include:
  • considerable experience of working in the humanitarian and international development sector at a strategic level, including overseas experience in both emergency response and long term programmatic roles;
  • significant experience of developing strategic partnerships in developing countries;
  • leading and developing teams, including management of multi-cultural and geographically dispersed teams;
  • engagement with institutional and private donors at a senior level;
  • organisational representation at a strategic level;
  • strong understanding of vulnerability issues and humanitarian trends, particularly within MENA area and conflict areas.
British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives.
