Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Advisor, Senegal

Role Purpose
The MNH Advisor will provide technical oversight and direction in the area of MNH as an integral part of the ISB-HB technical team. S/he will support to the program to ensure the delivery of facility and community level, high quality integrated maternal and newborn health interventions and ensure that project activities are aligned to the relevant national and county MNH policies, strategies and plans. S/he will provide leadership and technical guidance in the development, implementation and evaluation of MNH activities.
Child Safeguarding:
Level 3 - the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people
Key areas of accountability :
  • Will support the program to ensure the delivery of community and facility level, high quality integrated maternal and newborn health interventions;
  • Ensure that project activities are aligned to the relevant national and county MNH policies, strategies and plans;
  • Will provide leadership and technical guidance in the development, implementation and evaluation of MNH activities;
  • Under the leadership of the Technical Director (TD), the MNH Advisor will work to ensure the technical and methodological soundness of activities and, in collaboration with the project team, the MOH and partners, support the design of service delivery strategies, based on sound, current scientific evidence.
  • Will represent Save the Children in local coordination instances with government and other relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Medical Degree in Obstetrics-Gynecology or Advanced Degree in Nursing or Midwifery with a Master’s Degree in Public Health preferred
    • Postgraduate degree in public health or related field
    • At least 8 years of experience with progressively increasing responsibility for designing, managing and implementing MNH health programming in developing countries involving multiple stakeholders and implementing partners.
    • Demonstrated hands-on experience in building the capacity of Ministry of Health and community providers to deliver quality integrated MNH health services
    • Demonstrated experience of training and mentoring facility level clinical staff on high impact MNH interventions
    • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of the Senegal Health system and knowledge of MOH policies and standards for MNH. Previous experience working as medical doctor or nurse/midwife in a developing country preferred
    • Demonstrated supervisory experience of professional staff
    • Strong oral and written communication and presentations skills in French and preferably, English
    • Familiarity with USAID or other USG administrative, management and reporting procedures and systems
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to travel frequently within Senegal to program sites, and abroad if necessary
    • Qualified Senegalese nationals highly encouraged to apply.
    • Computer skills including MS Windows, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
