Regional Education Advisor - East Africa

INTERNATIONAL / PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT

And can you provide high caliber technical assistance and support the development of new technical approaches and products? Then you might be our new Regional Education Advisor in East Africa.
A STRATEGIC AND CROSS-CULTURAL OPPORTUNITY
Save the Children Denmark is a member of the global Save the Children; one of the world‘s leading organisations on education programming as well as global co-lead on the education cluster. This position provides an opportunity to work strategically and across different sectors and cultures, while at the same time affect real change on the ground.
You will be based in East Africa; the exact country location is negotiable. However, the position entails extensive travel throughout the region. The level of ambition is high, and you will be working with dedicated colleagues from multiple cultures and sectors, who all strive to make a difference for the most vulnerable children.
PRORGAMME SUPPORT, DEVELOPMENT AND ADVOCACY
You will deliver technical assistance of high quality and together with colleagues in the education team, drive programme development. You will promote and integrate cross-cutting issues and represent Save the Children in regional as well as global fora, to ensure continues stakeholder involvement and advocacy initiatives on education. Your key responsibilities include:
  • Support Save the Children Denmark as well as country offices in delivering high quality education programming and Education Clusters, primarily in East Africa and globally when needed
  • Review country-based education materials and deliver trainings in order to improve overall delivery of programmes, as well as build Save the Children staff and partner capacity
  • Monitor and evaluate education projects and programs as agreed and work on planning and implementation of Technical Assistance, including backstopping humanitarian emergencies.
  • Promote and integrate cross-cutting issues, including gender-sensitivity in all programming. Be mindful of and support the integration with other sectors where and as relevant.
  • Develop and expand the organisation’s education portfolio through support to development of new education projects incl. design and review of education project documents
  • Seek and identify new funding opportunities for Save the Children Denmark and country offices as relevant
  • Support the organisation in communicating education priorities within the organization and externally, through global and local campaigns and advocacy initiatives, as well as the use of education and child protection materials.
  • Support the strategic focus on fragile states, including operational development and running of the education theme.
  • Possible emergency deployment to emergencies (up to 3 month), if and when relevant.
AN EDUCATOR WITH INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
You are ambitious and driven, and shows a high-level of integrity, while at the same time being a strong collaborator who ensures stakeholder involvement. You hold yourself and others accountable for delivering qualitative work, including through new and innovative solutions. In addition, it is essential that you have:
  • A university degree within education, humanities, social science or equivalent (e.g. professional teaching college)
  • Strong proven experience with the formal education systems, preferably from teaching.
  • Several years of qualified international experience within education either from emergencies or from working in fragile states or a development context.
  • Strong proven experience of capacity building initiatives and delivery of trainings
  • Experience working with system strengthening of ministries and local government authorities
  • Good knowledge and understanding of humanitarian principles and established international standards, not least International Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies
  • Good understanding of gender, partnership and advocacy – and keen to promote and integrate these cross-cutting issues
  • Experience and/or strong understanding of education and child protection in an emergency/fragile states context
  • Excellent communication skills. Fluency in English and preferably one other language e.g. French, or Arabic

Employment and salary follow Save the Children Denmark’s present terms and conditions for short team employment. The position is for two years with possibility of extension. You will work 40 hours per week.
