About the Role
ZanaAfrica Group is looking for a creative photographer - visual storyteller to support our creative content development team as the lead Creative Photographer. We’re looking for someone to support the Nia Teen content development in telling compelling visual stories that bring the Nia Movement to life.
The Nia Movement aims to support girls and women in Kenya to define and live their purpose across their lifetime through access to feminine hygiene products coupled with safe spaces to learn about their bodies and their choices.
The Lead Photographer will work to deliver inspirational, authentic and iconic visual storytelling, both in their own work and the content developed by others contributing to the Nia Teen magazine. The photographic style and approach should engage and resonate with a Kenyan teen audience.
We’re looking for someone with eye for capturing compelling visuals/imagery to ensure the content comes alive in a way that the message is engaging and delivers our goal of equipping girls and women with the tools they need to live healthy lives is effectively delivered and reaching our target audience. S/he should be an experienced in art directing (including the planning and coordinating) of shoots, have a strong visual and editorial eye, have an intimate knowledge of industry trends and a passion for girls and women. The Nia Teen Photography Creative Challenge
World-class photography is intrinsic to the Nia Teen magazine: The photography featured in the magazine is a huge part of the styling the magazine- it is important that we always keep Nia photography bright and
positive- always centered on the girl and showing her in an empowered and positive light.
As the Lead photographer along with the Nia Magazine Editor and Creative/design team will work to generate and develop photographic stories/visual content that speaks to the spirit of the Nia brand and editorial vision for the magazine.
You will be a creative and technical support in facilitating girl-centered storytelling through photography. You should also look to identify and pursue opportunities to engage the local creative community in your work.
Ability to work through a sometimes messy and unpredictable creative process required.
Tentative Project Timeline + Activities:
To work with ZanaAfrica – Nia Teen magazine for 28 days (approx. 4 weeks) between: 22nd July – 29th August 2016 as Nia Teen Lead photographer on issue 1 magazine.
- 22nd – 26th July: Briefing, visual content direction proposal + shootpreparation (call sheets) with Nia Teen Creative Team
- 27th July - 17th August: Visual content gathering with Nia Teenwriters/contributors (in field/on location shoots)
18th August – 26th August: Post production-share selects with Nia Team + photo editing (this to happen weekly after shoots) - 29th August: Submit edited photos/selects to Nia Teen Creative design TeamDeliverablesWorking with the ZanaAfrica /Nia Creative team (Brand, Editorial and design team) for approx. 4 weeks commencing July – 29th August 2016 as Nia Teen Lead photographer you will be responsible for:
- Developing and executing a plan (visual art direction) for and delivery ofphotographic content for Nia Teen issue 1
- Participating/contributing to the content gathering planning process andcall sheet development (shoots prep)
- Brainstorming and liaising with Nia Creative to deliver iconicimages/photos that captures the spirit and theme of issue 1 that may and/or can be applied as the cover shot.
- Capturing relevant behind the scenes photography throughout issue 1 content gathering/creative development processes.
- Ensuring all magazine photographic content is inline with Nia Teen brand guidelines and content strategy
- Respond to briefs to deliver fresh, fun, honest and celebratory images, capturing the ‘Girl Gaze’, (The way girls see the world).
- Leading pre / post production and editing of photography – to high standard.
- Ensuring selects are shared with the Nia Teen Creative team to facilitate timely feedback and post production process
- Regular check-in with Creative Team throughout the project to ensure a collaborative approach to the visual story telling (alignment in written and visual content).
- Prepare and submit a report to ZanaAfrica of activities during the project timeframeo Final initiative report outlining the project from a photography perspective with recommendations –this report should be a combined output of both process and visual content produced
- All photography content collected during this period for Nia will belong to ZanaAfrica as relates to usage and rights stipulated in the contractAdditional Requirements.
- Photographers should have their own photography equipment.
- Imperative that you are comfortable with a team of girl reporters and
spending lots of time in the field. You will be expected to integrate into ZanaAfrica’s culture and add value to Nia Teen wherever you can; an amazing experience for someone with an appetite for new cultural experiences.- Go through the ZanaAfrica Child protection policy training and signing the same
- Ensure all photographed subjects sign ZanaAfrica consent/ release form
Qualifications + Requirements- Ability to develop simple and elegant approaches to complex design problems.
- 3+ years of experience with editorial/fashion/journalism photography in print and/or digital platforms.
- Strong understanding of editorial workflows and process.
- Knowledge of latest trends in interactive experiences, photography and emerging Internet technologies.
- Strong comfort level and flexibility for an organic and iterative design process.
- Ability to collaborate actively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent communication and analytical skills
- Knowledge of capabilities/limitations of current image production, andpublishing software with demonstrated fluency in design tools such as Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign.
- Good time management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills; Comfort and professionalism in interacting with varied audiences (especially girls and women from varied backgrounds)
- Fluent Kiswahili highly preferredCompensationSalary is commensurate with experience. Actual salary will be dependent on qualification and anticipated contribution to the company. - Accommodation and meals at shoot locations that are out of your baselocation (Nairobi)
- Bringing along all necessary equipment/s required for the photoshoot ZanaAfrica will provide the following;o Transport/Logistics to all shoot locations and for upcountry shoots o Office space to work from- if needed
FEE STRUCTURE (Retainer that is itemized): Provide the budget/quotation as per the role outlined with its deliverables and project timeframe
