PIH currently has implementation programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone and Navajo Nation. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.
Position Overview:
Working in close collaboration with the Boston Finance team and the West Africa Leadership Team in country, the Director of Finance and Accounting will be responsible for implementing PIH’s global financial policies and procedures in an effort to ensure proper financial controls are in place and all funding is accounted for according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and reported to donors accurately. The Director of Finance and Accounting will lead PIH’s diverse financial operations in country and manage a team that is responsible for all financial-related activities including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and various financial analyses.

Specific Responsibilities:
- Manage finance staff of twelve including: determining priorities, assigning work tasks, coordinating processes, providing direction and coaching, ensuring quality of deliverables, and managing performance.
- Manage all financial aspects of PIH Sierra Leone including:
- Preparing budgets, cash flow projections and monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports;
- Overseeing all financial management systems, policies, procedures and internal controls for PIH SL operations, including financial management of grant subcontractors
- Reviewing and/or preparing the financial portions of grant proposals and interim financial reports;
- Approving and monitoring all expenditures according to the approved budget;
- Providing up to date financial information and support to Boston Finance, the Executive Leadership Team and program staff to ensure close monitoring of budget to actual performance;
- Supporting the conduct of external and internal audits by managing all internal process requirements, serving as the primary finance liaison to the auditor(s), reviewing all preliminary audit reports and recommendations and preparing preliminary responses.
- Ensuring PIH SL is in compliance with all local laws and regulations with regards to payroll, financial reporting.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a BA/BS; ACCA, a CPA and/or MBA would be a plus.
- At least five years of experience as Finance Director, Accounting Manager, Controller or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization, operating multi-nationally, with a multi-million dollar budget.
- Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
- Comfort with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and need to juggle competing demands in a fast-paced and challenging work environment.
- Prior experience in managing and leading strong and diverse teams.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact professionally and with sensitivity with culturally diverse staff and other stakeholders.
- Strong operational and business analytics thinking.
- Proven ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate political astuteness, and tact.
- Prior experience working in Africa and in resource poor settings, a plus.
- Sense of humor and flexible disposition very helpful.
- Strong organizational & writing skills.
- Ability to live in West Africa full-time.
- Interest in social justice and health care issues
