IDLO is seeking to expand its work on environmental sustainability issues, especially in the area of Climate Justice, Ecosystems Management, Natural Resources, Land and Sustainable Energy. IDLO’s current Strategic Plan 2013 - 2016 identifies sustainable development as a thematic priority. Through the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Development with several cross-cutting “Planet SDGs”, countries have sent a firm signal of political intent to integrate human and economic development with ecosystem preservation. Enforcing these commitments and interlinked agendas will require breaking down traditional silos, developing new forms of cross-sectoral cooperation and promoting rule of law and human rights as an overarching framework to support SDG implementation.

- to build capacity of legal professionals, including of the judiciary, on sustainable development law includingclimate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity mainstreaming, sustainable consumption and production, land and community rights, natural resource management, sustainable energy;
- to strengthen access to justice and transparency, including institutional reform and capacity building for resolution of environmental disputes, enforcement of decisions (including judicial decisions), alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, customary law approaches; and
- to strengthen women's role in achieving sustainable development goals, including through inclusive policy and decision-making, land and resource rights, access to financing.
To this end, the Consultant, specialized in the intersection of environmental sustainability and the Rule of Law, will focus on mapping out opportunities for IDLO and facilitate the development of a strategy for new opportunities in these areas of expertise.
