Description:

FHI 360 is currently recruiting for the position of Mentor Coordinator for the upcoming USAID/Mali Girls’ Leadership Empowerment through Education (GLEE) project. The purpose of the GLEE project will be to improve girls’ learning outcomes and facilitate girls’ leadership and empowerment skills. Illustrative activities could include girls’ catch-up programs, scholarships, peer-to-peer mentoring, parent and community involvement and dialogue, conflict mitigation, and psycho-social and well-being support.
The Mentor Coordinator will be responsible for collaborating with school administrations and identifying teachers passionate about ‘teaching’ and willing to be project mentors. The Mentor Coordinator is also responsible for organizing mentor training workshops, ensuring that mentoring sessions in project schools are being executed as planned, and confirming that the mentor sessions cover topics most relevant to the beneficiaries’ lives. The Mentor Coordinator will assist in the monthly report and work plan preparation; organize and execute mentors’ training workshops; monitor and evaluate mentor training and mentors’ performance; facilitate the creation of sustainable girls’ mentoring in venues outside school/classroom setting; and prepare additional activities supporting secondary schools; for example, including internship and vocational training programs.
FHI 360 anticipates that the Mentor Coordinator will be based in in Bamako, Mali with project-funded travel to other parts of Mali. Recruitment is contingent upon successful award of the project, and the selection of the final applicant is subject to USAID approval.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

  • Assess the gender gaps of GLEE stakeholders including parents, teachers, school administration members, ministries and local district officials, and community leaders through a needs assessment
  • Organize and conduct trainings and capacity building activities for mentors
  • Undertake regular monitoring and observation visits to project schools to support and provide feedback and guidance to mentors
  • Facilitate mentoring sessions for all students and participants in project schools
  • Facilitate the creation and smooth running of a girls’ mentoring program in each school
  • Ensure the formation of peer to peer mentoring clubs in schools
  • Support the implementation/inclusion of Adolescent Reproductive Health Education in schools
  • Create channels of communication with school committees and teachers, caregivers and parents to support mentoring objectives
  • Help raise awareness on the impact of early pregnancy-early marriage and harmful gender norms and practices on the girls’ lives, health and future of their children
  • Together with the project team, develop and coordinate advocacy initiatives on girls’ education in partnership with media, private sectors and civil society.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or foreign equivalent) in gender studies, international development, education, other social sciences, or similar relevant field required. Master’s Degree is desirable.
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in relevant fields (e.g. gender and education, girls’ education, youth engagement, adolescent reproductive health / school-related gender-based violence).
  • Experience working with schools and local communities in Mali
  • Strong understanding of issues related to girls’ education and gender equality in Mali and familiarity with health and GBV prevention and response.
  • Ability to develop and use training tools, coordination and facilitation of training programs.
  • Experience in implementing gender strategies and programming preferably with youth.
  • Experience in guidance and counseling.
  • Experience operating in insecure environments; demonstrated creative problem solving and conflict and ethical management skills.
  • Fluency in French and English required; fluency in local languages highly desirable.
