For nearly 30 years, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has used science and medicine to document and call attention to mass atrocities and severe human rights violations.
A Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate, PHR is a global organization founded on the idea that health professionals, with their specialized skills, ethical duties, and credible voices, are uniquely positioned to stop human rights violations. PHR’s investigations and expertise are used to advocate for the protection of persecuted health workers and medical facilities under attack, prevent torture, document mass atrocities, and hold those who violate human rights accountable.

Internship Summary
A development internship provides an opportunity for a budding human rights activist to gain experience in and familiarity with areas such as fundraising, philanthropy, and the day-to-day operations of a Nobel Prize winning nonprofit organization with a global reach. The intern will assist with a wide range of database, research, administrative, and general tasks in PHR’s development team.
Responsibilities
- Research and prepare thorough, well-written briefings on prospective funders - individuals, governments, and foundations - that informs the audience about fundraising team initiatives
- Spearhead database maintenance and data entry in Raiser’s Edge, PHR’s donor database
- Assist with special event preparation and planning
- Conduct post-event analysis, evaluating event attendance and follow-up strategies
- Attend department and staff meetings
- Help implement new departmental initiatives
Qualifications and Experience
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program of study
- Strong interest in and commitment to human rights
- Exceptional analytical, writing, and verbal skills and superior research skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and professionally in a multi-faceted organization
- Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, commitment to data accuracy, and follow-through
- Openness to working with individuals from all different backgrounds
- Flexibility and willingness to work on a multiple projects under strict deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to “own” projects from start to finish
Location and Hours
- The development intern will be based in PHR’s New York office in midtown Manhattan
- Will require a minimum of 20 hours/week
- Hours can be flexible to accommodate different types of schedules
- The position will commence as soon as possible, with at least a 3-month commitment
- This is an unpaid position with an opportunity for school credit
