Policy Officer (Economist)

ONE is a global campaign and advocacy organization co-founded by Bono and backed by nearly seven million people from around the world and every walk of life that are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed.  ONE has offices in Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, New York City, Paris and Washington DC.
 
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Policy Officer will be responsible for providing policy guidance, economic analysis and writing on development finance, particularly official development assistance and domestic resource mobilization in Africa; and provide guidance and economic research on ONE’s range of policy issues. This role will be required to advise and/or take a lead role on a number of development finance projects/issues in support of ONE‘s global advocacy goals. This is a great opportunity for an economist looking to demonstrate their knowledge of global development policy, with a particular aptitude for the quantitative analysis of policy data, as well as the ability to translate complex policy issues into accessible formats. They must be a great team player and self-starter with excellent communications skills. Demonstrable experience of working on African economic issues is desirable. This is a full time position reporting to the Director of Development Finance, and can be based in either our Washington, DC office OR in our London, UK office. 
 
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Provide policy research and analysis of development finance in support of ONE’s global lobbying, advocacy, media and campaigning work
  • Conduct quantitative analysis of data related to development finance and economics, particularly in Africa; succinctly summarize key trends and results from analysis for broad consumption
  • Prepare written documents on policy issues related to development finance, including briefings, report chapters, policy analyses, blog posts, op eds, talking points, and other products
  • Contribute significantly to the production of ONE’s annual DATA Report
  • Attend meetings, seminars and workshops, to stay up to speed on key trends in development finance
  • As a member of the Global Policy team, proactively contribute to the development of new or emerging global policy areas, and support broader team work on global health, agriculture and inclusive growth, and transparency and accountability
  • Any other duties as required
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
  • A BA (preferably MA) in economics, finance, or another development-related field with strong economics coursework and quantitative skills
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in development, preferably Africa policy, in an NGO, think tank or government agency
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to research a wide-range of topics using multiple sources
  • Published economic research
  • Outstanding excel expertise; preference for good data visualization skills
  • Quick turnaround research skills – must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience
  • Ability to synthesise policy documents, identifying relevant key points, facts, and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audiences in a concise way
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Well organised with the ability to multi-task and operate in a fast-paced environment, with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads
  • Demonstrable understanding of the links between advocacy, policy-making, legislation, and programme implementation
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a global team environment
  • Flexible, resourceful and innovative
