Purpose of the Position
This post is responsible for the implementation of corporate research and due diligence (CRDD) reviews on opportunities and risks with business entities put forth by UNICEF and National Committee/country office colleagues for partnership consideration, specializing in non-financial engagements or in engagements with strong programmatic and advocacy focus (e.g. children rights and business advocacy, programme innovation).
The incumbent also acts as Corporate Research and Due Diligence team focal point for liaising with corporate communication and brand management colleagues and to ensure alignment of recommendations with current UNICEF programming and advocacy positioning and efforts.
The post is the primary CRDD assessor of programmatic and child rights advocacy engagement components of proposals, and the focal point for the development of risk assessment and other briefing notes related to considerations on business potential (and risks) vis-à-vis UNICEF programme priorities.
Key Expected Results
UNICEF engagement with business or other entities is in line with existing ethical standards and policies and based on clear and relevant CRDD recommendations for mitigating potential ethical or reputational risks related to partnerships, and is aligned with UNICEF mandate, programme priorities and advocacy efforts.
Timely, high quality, relevant, thorough and user friendly reports reflecting due diligence assessment are provided to requestors and organized in database/CRM for all users.
PFP corporate engagement New Business Development effectively supported in the development/prioritization of global prospecting targets based on clear research, analyses and criteria, as well as on focused and relevant risk assessment and recommendation.
Regular monitoring and reporting of CRDD deliverables ensured, including quality assurance for the CRM database in which the due diligence and proposal processes are embedded.
Prompt development of training and guidance materials and tools to reflect the policies and practices related to due diligence and proposal reviews.
CRM users promptly receive onboarding sessions and material aimed to facilitate their capacity to optimize effectiveness of the CRM system.
Robust sectoral factsheets, risk assessment briefs, briefing notes and reports to senior management and OED as required.
Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks
- Manages UNICEF due diligence research and evaluation of information on entities considered for engagement (with specific focus on corporate partnerships and engagements featuring a strong programmatic and advocacy focus), resulting in the formulation and delivery of relevant and focused recommendations around existing opportunities, related integrity issues and effective risk management measures.
- Provides clear, targeted and objective analysis of market data as referred to companies' sustainability policies and ethical performance against existing UNICEF mission, positioning and priorities and due diligence criteria, including through the effective use of specialized external sources and providers.
- Supports the development of positioning papers or consultative processes aimed to refine UNICEF approach towards engaging with specific sectors or companies.
- Ensures that corporate CRDD reports include profiling and data in support to the prospecting work of UNICEF private Sector Engagement (e.g. child rights and business, and programme innovation strategies) by focusing on key CSR due diligence criteria and decision making tools, and by reflecting engagement priorities and plans of the PSE teams.
- Liaises and oversees daily collaboration with corporate communication and branding, and with market knowledge in order to ensure alignment and inclusion of CRDD perspective.
- Co-manages the implementation of CRDD onboarding sessions for National Committees and country offices and their integration into the CRM system, as well as the generation of content for training and other supporting tools.
Qualifications of Successful Candidate
- Advanced university degree (Master's Degree or Equivalent) in Human Rights, Corporate Social Responsibility, Communication, International Development or Market Research. A first level university degree, with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and seven (7) years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in child rights advocacy, - Corporate Social Responsibility, knowledge management and reporting, market research, corporate engagement communications and/or project management.
- Familiarity and experience with UNICEF programmatic work and/or child rights programming is required.
- Fundraising and/or marketing experience is an important asset.
- Relevant experience in philanthropic arm of a corporate entity is an important asset.
- Experience with design and delivery of multi-stakeholder projects in the context of development work is desired.
- Experience with account or relationship management of bilateral corporate partnerships and/or corporate business development an asset.
- Knowledge of and experience in managing secondary research providers for corporate due diligence is an asset.
- Advanced and proven negotiation skills desired.
- Proficient knowledge of current theories and practices in socially responsible investing and social, environmental and governance issues.
- Proficiency in formulating recommendation and writing briefing and concept notes required.
- Ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form, and specific skills in developing proposals and presentations for alliances.
- Fluency in English (written & verbal) is required. Knowledge of an additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, - French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset.
