CARE experience has shown that capacity is often stretched beyond its limits by humanitarian disasters and conflict, and that additional senior staff resources are needed to provide program, operational and strategic support to ensure a timely, quality and effective response and to reduce financial and operational risks. In support of CARE’s Humanitarian Strategy, CARE International is investing in a standing Rapid Response Team (RRT), whose members spend up to 65% of their time deployed to the field.
Gender remains one of the most fundamental sources of inequality and marginalization in the world today. Gender-based discriminations, often exacerbated in crises-affected contexts, need to be analyzed and addressed throughout CARE’s interventions, with the purpose of offering equal opportunities and of empowering women and girls, both socially and economically. The Emergency Response Specialist - Gender in Emergencies works with country office and humanitarian teams to lead and coordinate the integration of gender into operational and strategic aspects of CARE’s humanitarian responses.
Because of the nature of the work, demands are fast-paced and unpredictable. This position requires an individual who is very flexible, provides expertise and leadership on gender equality programming at a senior level and who works well within a team. Experience in integrating gender equality considerations, with particular focus on girls and women’s empowerment, into humanitarian interventions is required.
What you offer:
- 5 years of experience in gender or GBV related programming with international NGOs , with field experience in an emergency response context;
- Experience mainstreaming gender equality and GBV in at least one of CARE’s key sectors;
- Experience with policy and advocacy work at the national or international level with regards to gender or GBV programming in emergencies;
- Ability to manage workflows, balance competing priorities and work effectively in a small, diverse, remote and busy team environments;
- Excellent capacity building, coaching and training skills, particularly in a partnership setting;
- Willingness to spend a high proportion of time travelling and often working in difficult
- conditions;
- Track record of high resilience under pressure and ability to support and motivate teams in these situations;
- A strong understanding of the humanitarian system, principles and key relief sectors;
- Capacity to work closely with communities affected by disaster;
- Excellent research, assessment, report writing, proposal development, and emergency strategy development skills;
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills;
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity
