Managing Director, Transparency International Secretariat

Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. In collaboration with more than 100 worldwide chapters and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.
TI has developed a five-year global strategy Together against Corruption: Transparency International Strategy 2020, which sets out its collective ambition for the coming years, and the TI Secretariat (TI-S) has set out an accompanying TI-Secretariat Implementation Plan that defines the Secretariat’s roles and contributions. At the same time, the TI Secretariat has transformed its structure and operational model to enhance delivery of its strategic aims.
In this context, the TI Board of Directors is seeking to appoint a new Managing Director of the TI Secretariat. TI-S plays a unique and important role in the TI movement, providing capacity support and institutional infrastructure to the TI movement while giving collective and global voice to TI activists from around the world. The Managing Director has overall responsibility for TI-S and serves as the lead liaison to the Board, the TI movement and all its constituents. In addition, the Managing Director has direct oversight over the teams at TI-S responsible for the TI chapter network/TI movement, safety, governance, and monitoring, evaluation and learning.
Main function:
The Managing Director (TI-S) is responsible for managing the Transparency International Secretariat, providing strategic vision and leadership, driving operational excellence, supporting the TI movement, and delivering global outreach, communications and fundraising.

Reports to: Chair and Vice Chair of the Transparency International Board of Directors
Remuneration: Salary and benefits commensurate with experience and the responsibilities of the position
Responsibilities:
The Managing Director will lead and collaborate with the leadership team to ensure that the Secretariat fulfills its main roles. TI-S should 1) deliver global evidence-based advocacy and awareness-raising about corruption. The Managing Director will prioritise 2) the sharing of knowledge and will foster learning on what works to stop corruption. S/he will also ensure that 3) TI’s national chapter network is skillfully supported, including through joint fundraising efforts. Finally, s/he will promote 4) a Secretariat that promotes and implements best organisational and governance standards and practices. In addition to filling the senior leadership and managerial function at the Secretariat, the Managing Director will be responsible for the following, in collaboration with the leadership team:
Vision and Leadership
  • Providing inspirational leadership and direction to TI-S and the TI movement, building trust and respect, introducing bold ideas, and demonstrating responsibility and professionalism in all settings
  • Offering thought-leadership on major strategic anti-corruption issues and driving innovation in TI-S approaches and programming
  • Working with the TI movement to seize strategic opportunities and/or to mitigate major risks and challenges
  • Overseeing and monitoring TI-S’ progress towards the strategic goals as set out in the TI Strategy 2020 and the corresponding TI-S Implementation Plan 2020, including regular reviews and evaluations, and supporting the Board and movement in the monitoring of TI’s overall impact under Strategy 2020
Organisation and Operations
  • Ensuring the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organisation, where effective and timely decision-making is paramount
  • Driving programmatic excellence, highest quality services, appropriate safety and risk assessments, and rapid responses to challenges for TI-S and the movement
  • Overseeing the financial position of the organisation, including the development of financial plans, the monitoring of budgets, and the exercise of sound financial controls, and driving financial decision-making that supports the strategic needs of the organisation
  • Aligning governance standards and practices with TI’s vision and values and leading the organisation towards best practice in our sector
Global Outreach and Fundraising
  • Serving as a world-class advocate and spokesperson against corruption and in support of TI’s agenda for accountability at major international fora and with international media
  • Cultivating key partnerships and/or collaboration models that serve to enhance both advocacy and fundraising opportunities
  • Building and maintaining key donor and funder relationships and steering TI-S toward new funding models in anticipation of a changed fundraising landscape
  • Increasing fundraising for the TI movement as part of a financial growth strategy under the Strategy 2020
Management and Internal Communication
  • Cultivating a strong, transparent and respectful working relationship with the staff, Board and TI movement
  • Exercising direct management of TI-S regional advisers, SAFE (Safeguarding Anti-Corruption Fighters’ Efforts), governance, accountability and learning teams, supporting them with strategic leadership in their critical functions vis-à-vis the TI network of chapters and members
  • Facilitating cross-team collaboration and strengthening internal communication mechanisms and practices
  • Promoting a positive, inclusive, and diverse work environment
  • Building, leading, and developing the TI-Secretariat team, including the leadership team, implementing training and coaching for staff development
  • Liaising with and reporting to the International Board, in particular the Chair and Vice Chair, and supporting the Board in their TI-S oversight and movement leadership roles
Desired Profile:
  • Advanced university degree or equivalent in a relevant academic field
  • 15+ years of relevant professional experience in international, management roles of which at least 5 in non-profit or mission-driven organisations
  • Management experience in complex settings, with demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others, including in change processes
  • Successful track record in guiding and contributing to program design and delivery, strategy development and implementation, global outreach and advocacy, as well as donor relations and fundraising
  • Experience leading organisational development; demonstrated drive for results, quality and excellence
  • Expertise in issues of governance, international development, human rights, social justice or civil society; knowledge of and/or significant interest in anti-corruption and accountability
  • Success in establishing and maintaining partnerships and collaborative work across private, public, civil society, and research organisations
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and networking skills, with an ability to articulate messages to a broad variety of audiences and motivate, inform, and persuade them
  • Demonstrated leadership in diverse and multi-cultural settings
  • Excellent language skills in (written and spoken) English (to native speaker standard); additional languages an asset
  • Strong commitment and demonstrated adherence to the values of social justice, participation, transparency, integrity, and accountability
