SNV is a not-for-profit international development organisation. Background
SNV has worked in Ethiopia since the 1970s and currently operates in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Oromia, Amhara and Tigray regional states, providing capacity strengthening support in three sectors – Agriculture, WASH and Renewable Energy. Through its work in agriculture, SNV in Ethiopia supports the development of number of value chains such as milk and milk products, honey and bees wax, oil seeds and edible oil, fruit and pulses, livestock and horticulture. This takes a value chain development approach, with special focus on improving access to sustainable markets for smallholder farmers and by developing business-to-business relations and improving business development services.
Project Summary
Cooperatives for Change (C4C), was started by SNV in partnership with Agriterra in 2012, with the goal of increasing output marketing by establishing sustainable business arrangements. C4C aims at a breakthrough in the performance of the cooperative sector in Ethiopia by building the capacity of cooperatives to improve the services they provide to smallholder farmers and linking the farmers, through their membership of the cooperatives, to more profitable markets. As a result, in the past two years, cooperative unions served by the project have tripled their output marketing performance.
Overview of the position
The Project Manager will lead and manage the workforce and implementation of the project within the scope, budget, timeline and quality levels prescribed in the contract sighed with the donor and according to SNV’s standards and approaches, in order to achieve high quality and timely delivery of agreed results and deliverables of the project.
This position reports to the Sector Leader for Agriculture in Ethiopia and closely collaborates with other project managers within the sector.
Key Responsibilities
  • Guide the project set-up nationally as appropriate, including developing work plans, budgets and competence table with financial responsibilities and mandates;
  • Overall management of all human, physical and financial resources allocated to the project;
  • Responsible for technical steering and lead some of the more complex capacity development services;
  • Build, strengthen and manage strategic partnerships with regional governments, key partners, institutions and stakeholders;
  • Manage relations with the donor; network and represent the project at national / international level during fairs, seminars and other platforms in collaboration with the management team
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the project management team to ensure that all milestones set in the annual work plan are met, develop mitigation plans to reduce setbacks and take corrective actions to remedy any deviation from the work plans;
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to the donor as per donor requirements; quality assurance of international and national experts’ project reports in accordance with donor requirements and SNV professional reporting standards;
  • Guide knowledge development, documentation and communication and branding in close collaboration with the donor and country sector leader; and
  • Identify follow-up funding and partnership possibilities with country management and business development.
Candidate Profile
  • Master’s degree in agricultural economics, business management, rural development or any related field of study;
  • At least 10 years of practical experience in project management in Africa with demonstrated experience in Value Chain and Private Sector development;
  • Senior project management and leadership experience in large-scale and innovate projects;
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and facilitating multi-stakeholder processes;
  • Strong, preferably cutting edge, knowledge of the agricultural sub-sector, commodities markets and market/value chain analysis. Knowledge of clustering approach, systemic competitiveness, local economic development and/or other relevant private sector methodologies preferred;
  • Hands-on, results orientated, self-driven and able to manage own work;
  • Proven experience in advising and coaching;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and effective presentation skills in English;
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to work in a challenging and dynamic context;
  • Affinity with the private sector and its ways of working
