OXFAM is working in more than 90 countries around the world responding to emergencies, working on preparedness and contingency plans for longer term programmes. We have a Response and Resilience Team comprising people with various skills sets who are deployed from their home base to countries where Oxfam is delivering humanitarian programmes. We are looking to recruit a Community Mobiliser to work in our Water , Sanitation and Public Health Promotion programmes as a member of the RRT. The post holder will enable our programmes to be underpinned by a good understanding of communities’ beliefs, behaviours and perceptions, enabling the WASH teams to adapt and/or revise their approaches and interventions and develop appropriate tools and ways of working with communities to enhance community participation and gender equality.
A good understanding of affected communities will play a crucial role in the quality of the response.
About the Role
Oxfam’s RRT Community Mobilisers work closely with engineering colleagues to assess, design , implement and monitor our humanitarian WASH programmes ensuring that communities are encouraged to engage with the WASH hardware provided. Your skills will support field teams to develop community profiles and to better understand cultural norms and community dynamics maximising opportunities for meaningful community participation . Your previous experience of working in a hands on way with communities combined with your work in humanitarian contexts will enable you to lead a small team in designing and delivering the community elements of our WASH programmes.
About you
Your understanding of public health will ideally encompass emergency and development contexts in different countries. Exposure to a variety of research methodologies and participatory approaches will be helpful. As a result you’ll have a good practical understanding of how to analyse and understand the local socio-cultural determinants and behaviours of different communities. In addition, you’ll have good analytical, needs assessment, capacity planning and report-writing skills and excellent communication skills. Add a relevant post-graduate qualification plus a working level of spoken and written English, and you could soon be making a difference at a country level. One other language such as French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic is desirable..
