Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellowships in Sociology at Nuffield College

by Unknown  |  at  3:11 PM

(Two posts)
Nuffield College intends to appoint with effect from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter, two Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellows (PPRFs) in Sociology, broadly construed to include sociology, demography, social and medical statistics, social psychology, public policy, and social policy. Applicants who wish to undertake research in Economic History, or interdisciplinary research in Sociology which includes Economics and/or Politics are also welcome to apply for the Fellowships. The College particularly encourages applications from candidates who work or plan to work in the field of one or more of the College’s Sociology Fellows.
The key responsibilities of the Research Fellows are to engage in advanced study and independent scholarly research in sociology broadly construed (as above); to disseminate research findings through publication and participation in conferences and workshops; and to take part in the intellectual life of the College by organising workshops, seminars or conferences. Research Fellows may also undertake ad hoc paid teaching or supervision within the collegiate University, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
To be eligible, candidates should hold a bachelors and/or masters degree in a relevant field and should by 1 September 2016 have completed, or be close to completing, a doctorate. Candidates must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously held a research fellowship similar to that advertised for more than one year at the time of taking up the fellowship. Allowances will be made for career breaks (for example, family-related leave) and candidates are asked to provide relevant justification. Prospective candidates should also have experience of carrying out independent research and a track record of excellent quality papers appropriate for and commensurate with their career level. They should have the willingness to contribute to the intellectual life of the College, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The posts are fixed-term for three years, starting on 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. Research Fellows are entitled to single accommodation in College (at a subsidised rate). Further benefits include a research allowance, free lunch and dinner in College and child support funds.
Further particulars, including information on how to apply, are available from the College web page: http://www.nuffield.ox.ac.uk/About/Vacancies/Documents/SocPPRF.pdf or from the College Registrar, Nuffield College, Oxford OX1 1NF. Email: pprf@nuffield.ox.ac.uk.
The College exists to promote excellence in education and research, and is an equal opportunities employer committed to equality and valuing diversity. Applications are particularly welcome from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in posts in the College.
