Appel de Genève - Geneva Call is a private, not-for- profit humanitarian organisation founded in 1998 under Swiss law.
Appel de Genève - Geneva Call is dedicated to promoting respect by armed non-State actors (ANSAs) for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence, in particular those related to the protection of civilians. Appel de Genève - Geneva Call is currently focusing its efforts on banning the use of anti-personnel mines, protecting children from the effects of armed conflict, prohibiting sexual violence in armed conflict and working towards the elimination of gender discrimination.
The key tool of engagement that Appel de Genève - Geneva Call uses is an innovative instrument known as the Deed of Commitment, which allows ANSAs to undertake to respect specific international humanitarian norms. Appel de Genève - Geneva Call is one of the world’s leading organizations in the field of humanitarian engagement with ANSAs
In 2014, Geneva Call carried out 43 projects in 16 countries. Its annual budget is CHF 3.9 million.
MAIN ROLE
Under the supervision of the Middle East Programme Director, the post holder is responsible for the implementation of operations in a number of Middle Eastern countries (mainly Syria ) covered by the Department.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
· Lead, or assist in, project design, including the preparation of concept papers, funding proposals and budgets, fundraising;
· Lead, or assist in, project management and implementation, including organizing and participating in field missions and activities, supervising local staff and consultants, liaising with partners and stakeholders, reporting to donors, and overseeing project monitoring and evaluation;
· Conduct background research and prepare conflict assessment, stakeholder mapping and situation reports on selected countries;
· Attend and, where appropriate, represent his geographical region of work in conferences, workshops and meetings with stakeholders. In some specific cases represent Geneva Call in international fora;
· Participate in annual and quarterly programme evaluations, and in strategic planning;
· Manage information and knowledge, including filing, within the Department;
· Provide other programme or project-related assistance, including administrative assistance, as required by the Programme Director;
· Participate in the overall activities of Geneva Call;
· Perform any other duties as required by the Programme Director.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Advanced degree in international relations or International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law, political science or a related field, or equivalent work experience
· At least 5-7 years of relevant work experience. Experience working in humanitarian contexts with ANSAs in Middle East would be highly valued;
· Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights standards;
· Ability to analyse information, evaluate options and to think and plan strategically;
· Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with experience of negotiation and representation at a high level. Demonstrable experience of engaging with ANSAs would be an asset;
· Ability to work under pressure and in conflict-affected settings, and to handle numerous tasks simultaneously;
· Willingness to work independently and with minimum supervision, and as a part of a multicultural team;
· Strong organizational skills;
· Excellent command of English and Arabic (both oral and written). French would be an asset;
· Demonstrable computer literacy, including the MS package;
· Swiss citizen, C permit or the appropriate status to obtain a valid work permit according to current Swiss legislation.
