I: JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Head Teacher, the Special Needs Education Teacher will be responsible for performing professional pedagogical duties and impart knowledge, skills, develop personality and character that will provide a lasting and inspiring impact on the SNE learners’ lives. The position holder will also perform professional Para teaching duties on need basis.
II: RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
R1: Perform all pedagogical duties in a school for SNE pupils
1.1 Prepare all professional records for curriculum implementation.
1.2 Teach braille lessons.
1.3 Develop teaching/learning resources for effective and motivating lessons.
1.4 Keep all records and use them to improve performance.

1.5 Conduct continuous assessment tests and terminal exams mark and record results.
1.6 Train SNE pupils in co-curricular activities so as to compete with others.
1.7 Conduct remedial lessons for the learners.
1.8 Teach regular primary school learners when need arises.
R2: Training teachers on modern trends in special needs education
2.1 Train teachers in new pedagogical skills in relation to integrated/inclusive approach in the schools that are responsive to SNE pupils.
2.2 Assist the teachers develop basic theoretical and practical knowledge about the teaching profession.
2.3 Train teachers on production of low cost teaching materials.
2.4 Perform minor repairs of braille machines and facilitate training of teachers in maintenance of equipment.
2.5 Participate in workshops and seminars for teachers particularly Saturday TOT.
R3: Management of compensatory equipment for children with Special Needs
3.1 Assess children and prescribe the right equipment for use.
3.2 Train children on the proper use any equipment given to boost residual ability.
3.3 Sensitize other children and school community on special equipment.
3.4 Ensure that given equipment are put to proper use.
3.5 Ensure maintenance and repair of equipment are done regularly.
R4 Facilitate Community participation in promoting special needs education
4.1 Involve the refugee community through the school PTA in special needs issues.
4.2 Encourage the school committee to make the school compounds environmentally friendly and barrier free.
4.3 Assess, identify, and refer children with special learning needs through a programmed home based care visits and follow ups.
R5: Managing Classroom resources
5.1 Responsible for proper management of classroom resources issued for promoting teaching/learning environment i.e. textbooks, teaching aids and desks and others materials.
5.2 Accountable for keeping proper and accurate lists of books issued to students and ensure school authority kept aware of any discrepancies.
5.3 Ensure proper utilization compensatory equipment during classroom instruction.
5.4 Ensure proper storage and safety of equipment after use by children.
R6: Promote partnership with local educational Institutions
6.1 Conduct community mobilization and sensitization on significance of special needs education.
6.2 Regularly monitor the attendance, scholastic performance and learning needs of the children with special needs in the camp in close liaison with other special institutions.
6.3 Initiate close relationship with teachers of local Kenyan Special Institutions so as to share approaches for effective teaching in refugee schools.
6.4 Train children leaving with disabilities and facilitate their participation in games and sports regionally and nationally.
R7: Development of Human Potential in Students
7.1 Prepare high achieving pupils’ for post primary education.
7.2 Develop in pupils’ an awareness and appreciation of innovation in the field of education and an ability to utilize them.
7.3 Prepare the pupils’ to face life with self-confidence and independence.
7.4 Offer career guidance to pupils’.
7.5 Conduct counseling for pupils’ in need of counseling and liaise with parents of individual learners for effective delivery of counseling services.
7.6 Work in a team spirit with other teachers to promote understanding of school mission and goals successfully.
7.7 Attend to assignment outside the camps.
V: WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is based in Dadaab, Dagahaley Camp. This is a non-family work station. Hot weather is prevalent throughout the year with limited basic amenities. Road movement between the work station and Garissa as well as inter-camp movement must be under police escort (scheduled convoys), with strict adherence to safety and security instructions all the time. It is a six days work station with a compensatory time off according to CTO policy.
The incumbent shall reside in the CARE compound while executing official duties and shall obey and adhere to residential compound regulations.
Education, Experience and Competencies
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or Diploma in Special Education with specialization in visual impairment.
Experience: 2 years of relevant teaching experience of children leaving with visual impairment VI
Certificate: Applicants holding PI certificate have an added advantage.
Competencies:
· Mastery of braille.
· Ability to identify learners with special needs
· Must be able to teach Intellectually Challenged.
· Possess analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Good report writing skills
· Computer literate in MS word and Excel. Applicants demonstrating evidence of being examiners with Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in area of specialization will be given priority
