UN Junior Professional Officer (JPO)

Overview
Through USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), the United States sponsors qualified U.S. citizens for employment in the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Program.
These fully funded JPO positions strengthen the humanitarian coordination capacity of UNOCHA. They further encourage U.S. citizens to become active members of the international community. After completing their JPO assignments, a number of JPOs successfully compete for positions at UNOCHA, and in other international and non-governmental organizations.
Duties
Under the overall guidance of the Head of Donor Desk, the incumbent will support the activities related to the implementation of the Resource Mobilization/Donor Relations Plan of Action.
The main duties and responsibilities are to:
· Support the Section in its responsibilities towards donors and Permanent Missions with regard to and relationship management.
· Assist with the provision of secretariat assistance to the UNOCHA Donor Support Group (ODSG). In this regard, support the development of the annual work plan and schedule of meetings.
· Assist with the timely organization of regular and ad hoc meetings in Geneva, including the preparation of all required background and briefing material.
· Assist with overseeing the planning and organization of the annual ODSG field visit and High Level Meeting, in consultation with the ODSG Chair and concerned UNOCHA branches.
· Fully participate in high-level meetings and draft briefing notes for meetings with representatives of UN Member States or international organizations.
· Keep track of outstanding ODSG donor issues and action points and follow up as required.
· Assist in organising country specific and general briefings for donors in Geneva.
· Assist in collating and preparing for various donor missions conducted by Senior Management Team, DRS or other relevant entities.
· As requested, participate in visits to donor capitals, UNOCHA Headquarters in New York and UNOCHA country offices.
Eligibility
Education: Graduate or law degree in fields including but not limited to humanitarian affairs, international relations, human rights, disaster management, public policy or a related field.
Experience: Five or more years of progressively responsible professional experience working in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management or related area, preferably involving fundraising. Prior work experience in, or familiarity with, the UN system is also preferred.
Languages: Proficiency in at least one U.N. working language in addition to English is preferred. Work Location: Geneva, Switzerland
