Amnesty International Secretariat (AIIS), which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally.  We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards.  We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the Amnesty International (AI) movement globally, fostering Amnesty International’s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world. 
This is one of 4 Regional Trust and Foundations Manager posts we are currently hiring as part of a new global fundraising structure.  The other Regional Trust and Foundations Manager postsare Americas, Asia and Europe.
Job description
The main purpose of this job is to support priority sections in their Trust and Foundations specialist fundraising activities in Africa, including advising on and coordinating of financial investment and other capacity building resources which will drive direct fundraising activities and financial growth in Amnesty International in the region, resulting in successful fundraising programmes according to market potential and in line with strategic fundraising goals that add value to the movement.
The Global Trust and Foundations Programme sits within the Global Fundraising and Engagement (GFE) Directorate, which provides strategic leadership to AI sections for the overall movement growth strategies in people and money.
The post holder will be responsible for the support and development of a number of strategic priority Amnesty growth markets in the area of Trust and Foundations in the African Region, the aim of which is to enable the country operations to maximise their potential growth according to market potential and in line with strategic fundraising goals. This will increase our presence worldwide and help those Amnesty countries to become self-sustainable or develop a more diverse income portfolio.
Key duties and responsibilities
  • Support priority sections in the region in their fundraising activities from Trust and Foundations.
  • Liaise with sections from the Global North to develop multi-year funding proposals for sections in the region of responsibility in the Global South.
  • Identify and develop an extensive knowledge of global and local funding opportunities.
  • Maintain an overview of AI projects and activities in order to match to funding opportunities.
  • Advise staff on project development, production of proposals and budgets and where necessary convene and coordinate proposal development project teams.
  • Support Trust and Foundations fundraisers in sections in the region to develop beneficial relationships with prospective funders through appropriate cultivation and stewardship in order to protect and develop AI’s funding constituency.
  • Maintain and enhance AI’s reputation and credibility with grant giving bodies through the implementation of best practice in grants management.
  • Ensure the implementation of the global fundraising policies, guidelines and procedures are followed. Provide appropriate training and support to regional teams and AI sections and structures on project planning, implementation, reporting and evaluation aspects, as well as financial budgeting and monitoring.
  • Assist in the development of capacity building strategies and skill sharing opportunities for AI sections and structures in the region in order to ensure AI’s ability to respond to funding opportunities from trusts and foundations.
  • Carry out own administrative tasks related to the post in accordance with the agreed guidelines for self-servicing.
  • Other tasks as assigned according to the grade and nature of this post.
Required Skills and Experience:
Fundraising skills
  • Extensive experience of developing large scale, multi-year funding proposals to a variety of (international) trusts, foundations and institutional sources.
  • Experience of developing and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships with funders.
  • Experience in identifying funding information sources and carrying out in-depth research on funding opportunities.
  • Preferably experience in fundraising from Trust and Foundations in the region.
  • Ability to make strategic decisions in order to meet fundraising targets.
  • Experience of developing and implementing long-term grant-fundraising strategy.
  • Ability to provide mentoring and training on fundraising issues and specifically grants fundraising.
  • Ability to develop strategic relationships with funders and represent AI in a professional manner to the external funding world.
Project planning and development:
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in project planning with competing deadlines, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to provide coaching and mentoring on project management.
Communication:
  • Excellent written communication skills with a proven ability to explain complex issues clearly for external audiences.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and tact in dealing with and building relationships with key stakeholders (both internal and external) at all levels.
  • Ability to build support for and represent the team within the movement and liaise with people at all levels of the organization.
Experience of judgement and strategic thinking:
  • Experience of identifying and using information to make sound judgements on projects, with overall responsibility for portfolio of funders and projects.
  • Ability to understand and exploit opportunities to pursue specific goals, this includes being able to determine what information is needed, what level of consultation and decision-making would be appropriate and what impact specific decisions may have on related areas.
  • Ability to influence others when required and make recommendations on alternative courses of action if appropriate.
Financial and budgeting skills:
  • Experience in analysing, compiling and editing budgetary information for large projects.
  • Experience in monitoring and overseeing large budgets and taking strategic decisions on most cost-effective solutions, taking into considerations funders’ requirements.
  • Ability to provide advice on best value in the use of resources and taking overall responsibility for own project budgets.
Training and skill sharing experience:
  • Experience of conducting training, preferably in project management or grant fundraising.
  • Ability to devise, in collaboration with others, training programmes on topics linked to grants fundraising.
  • Ability to assess training needs and evaluate best way forward for sharing skills across the movement.
Team work:
  • A proven ability to work effectively within a team, setting clear goals, coordinating work with colleagues and providing advice to other members of the team when required.
  • A proven ability to negotiate solutions and resources between programmes and project team members
Travel
  • A willingness and ability to travel occasionally if required and work occasionally in the evenings and on weekends if required.
