GHEI is recruiting for a Communications Officer to be based in Humjibre, Ghana.

Duration: 13-24 months
Job Summary: This position entails working closely with both GHEI’s local Ghanaian staff and western team to manage GHEI's international volunteer programs and organizational publicity and web-based marketing. International volunteer program responsibilities include managing volunteer recruitment, applications, pre-departure and providing program support while volunteers are on site. The Communications Officer is also responsible for promoting GHEI's work through social media and blogging, website maintenance, organizing promotional and fundraising campaigns, and writing reports intended for Ghanaian and Western stakeholders. This position requires a great deal of flexibility since responsibilities can change greatly throughout the year. Other essential qualities include creativity, an outgoing personality, thoughtfulness, initiative, and an ability to live and work in a challenging, resource poor environment.
This position reports to the Country Director and U.S.-based Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
- Manage Summer Serve and Learn volunteer recruitment, applications, pre-departure and provide support to teams of volunteers while on site
- Manage GHEI’s social media presence, blog, and website
- Organize all hard mailings, e-newsletters, and fundraising campaigns for donor affinity groups, Serve and Learn alumni, and others
- Create promotional materials marketing GHEI and GHEI volunteer programs
- Coordinate annual and quarterly reports for Ghanaian and Western stakeholders
- Revise internal and external proposals and reports
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Relevant work experience in a developing country
- Familiarity with social media and blogging
- Creativity and willingness to take initiative
- Ability to live and work in a resource-poor environment with limited internet capabilities and intermittent power outages
- Demonstrated cross-cultural awareness
- Excellent spoken and written English
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders in Ghana and staff in the US/UK/Canada
- Ability to work independently and as part of multicultural team
- Commitment to the highest professional standards, ethics, and values
- Resilient, patient, flexible, and willing to perform a wide variety of tasks as they arise
- Commitment to building local capacity and working within established local systems, structures, and cultural norms
Desirable Qualifications:
- Familiarity with volunteer and volunteer program management
- Familiarity with nonprofit publicity and marketing
Compensation:
The Communications Officers receives a local salary equivalent to ~$160 USD/month. Free housing, electricity, all business related travel, in-country work permits and Visas are also paid for by GHEI. Relocation costs (i.e. airfare), vaccinations, and evacuation insurance are not covered by GHEI.
