Founded in 2002 by President William J. Clinton, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) works to broaden access to life-saving treatment for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria patients in the poorest parts of the world. As part of this mission, CHAI’s “Access Programs” approach global public health challenges with market-based strategies, using simultaneous engagement on both the supply and demand sides of the market. On the supply side, CHAI engages with suppliers of essential drugs and diagnostics to improve access to products by lowering prices, accelerating new products to market, and sharing market intelligence. On the demand side, CHAI organizes and consolidates demand for health commodities by helping governments to scale up treatment programs, mobilize new resources, improve procurement processes, and enhance local human resource capacity. Working with over 30 governments and other partners, CHAI is focused on large-scale impact on many of the largest barriers to effective treatment and care.
CHAI has played a particularly important role in the marketplace for pediatric antiretroviral therapy (ART), substantially expanding access to the appropriate drugs and diagnostics to meet the unique needs of children.
Position:
The Pediatric Country Support Associate will work to ensure the continued scale-up of high-quality, optimal diagnostics and antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV exposed and positive children. The Associate will help to optimize policies and processes to ensure access to high quality ARVs and diagnostics at consistently and reliably affordable prices. The Associate will also work to ensure that countries have adopted best practices in forecasting and procurement of pediatric ARVs and diagnostics.

This position will entail 50-60% travel. There is the possibility of this position to be based in other Eastern or Southern African countries.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to countries on a variety of drug-related and access-to-medicines topics (e.g., drug quality and pricing, procurement, tendering, forecasting, new product introduction, product trade-offs, etc.)
- Work closely with in-country partners to understand funding flows, ordering cycles, and delivery timelines to ensure an uninterrupted supply of pediatric products
- Help countries to build their capacity on quantification issues – either through leadership in forecasting workshops, participation in technical working groups, or training of forecasting models – in order to avoid stock-outs, reduce waste and minimize costs
- Create and update optimization materials and forecasting and procurement best-practices to share with countries
- Support governments in maintaining pediatric treatment programs, including national Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) testing systems
- Serve as a liaison between countries and CHAI global teams on pediatric forecasts and ordering cycles
- Support countries in assessing opportunities for optimization of national treatment guidelines; assist with budget and scenario analysis; help develop strategy to advocate for the changes with key in-country opinion leaders
- Facilitate introduction of new, improved, or less costly medicines by advising countries on key products, market trends, and by supporting with the development of new product roll-out strategy
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree plus 2-5 years of work experience
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Strong problem solving skills and analytical capabilities
- Detail-oriented with strong organization skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently
- Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations and work in a fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment
- Experience living and/or working in developing countries
- High level of proficiency in relevant computer applications particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Familiarity with global health issues
