Senior Expert on climate change for the Low Carbon Development Programme
The UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP) is seeking a Senior Expert on climate change for the Low Carbon Development Programme.
The UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP) Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development(formerly UNEP Risoe Centre) is a leading international research and advisory Centre on energy, climate and sustainable development. We work in close partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and have project activities in more than 50 developing countries. The Centre collaborates with a large number of international and government and research institutions, especially in developing countries.
The successful candidates will join an international team of over 60 professionals in an interdisciplinary work environment that combines research, methodology development, capacity building and project implementation in the areas of low carbon development, climate finance and mitigation policies, actions and technologies in developing countries.
Job description
The Expert on Climate Change will be engaged in a number of international projects in the fields of analysis, concept development, capacity building and project management especially in the areas of:
- Climate Finance and stakeholder engagement, involving support for concrete project development as well as establishment of more generic financing models for policies and projects. Focus is on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) and possible new market mechanisms as well as approaches for private sector engagement for policy implementation.
- Mitigation Policy and technology, involving support for the integration of climate change related issues into development planning; formulating and implementing national/sectoral low carbon development strategies and preparation of financeable NAMAs in developing countries. This will cover areas like support for institutional capacity development, support to national processes to implement NAMAs and MRV systems. Analytical work will focus on development of tools for analyzing and prioritizing mitigation actions and baseline methodologies.
Qualifications
Education: The successful candidate should have a degree in economics, engineering, planning, environmental sciences or other relevant discipline, at a Ph.D. level.
Work experience and competencies: The position is targeting candidates with more than 10 years of relevant work experience of which at least five needs to be in developing countries. The required competencies include in-depth knowledge and understanding of climate change, the UNFCCC process, especially the mitigation policies, technologies and climate finance as well as analytical skills and experience in preparing technical and/or policy-relevant reports and papers.
Specific experience in one or more of these areas will be highly desirable:
- Private sector engagement in climate change mitigation;
- Project finance, preferably in the NAMAs area;
- Quantitative analysis of mitigation potentials and costs; and
- Capacity building including delivering workshops, webinars, e-learning and other mediums.
Developing country experience is mandatory and we are especially interested in candidates with experience or expertise in African regions.
Demonstrated ability to initiate new projects in co-operation with international institutions will be expected.
Languages
The working language at UDP is English. In addition proficiency in Spanish or French will be an asset.
Terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. Individual supplements along with travel and expatriation allowances will be provided. Contracts are offered initially for a two-year term, with possibility of extension.
