PURPOSE
  1. To lead the technical interventions for nutrition for a joint resilience project (JRP) in 4 localities of Kassala state.
  2. To support collaboration with the Government line ministries in the implementation of the JRP.
  3. To support documentation and knowledge management of the JRP.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Build capacity of government and implementing partners to implement the health and nutrition components of the JRP.
Implement behavior change communication (BCC) to infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in close collaboration with C4D.
Scale up the management of treatment of severe acute malnutrition at community and health facility level, including reinforcing referral services for management of severe acute malnutrition with complications and childhood illnesses from the community to in-patient services.
Strengthen linkages between community health services and facility based services and ensure seamless transition for SAM cases between in-patient care and continued recovery at community level.
Ensure micronutrient supplementation of pregnant and lactating women as follows:
Iron and folic acid supplementation to pregnant women in the second and third trimesters; lactating women in the first three months postpartum;
Vitamin A supplementation to lactating women in the first six weeks postpartum;
Ensure availability and promotion of household consumption of iodized salt;
Promotion of household consumption of fortified foods, if and where available.
Strengthen reproductive health services through community midwives and village midwives to ensure:
Promotion of use of effective child spacing methods to prevent maternal and child malnutrition.
Sensitization of communities to increase awareness on the importance of delaying marriage and childbearing to enable children to complete their own growth, to reduce maternal malnutrition and mortality;
Support early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life to reduce neonatal mortality;
Build on the existing community structures including mother support groups/women’s groups to increase awareness on maternal and neonatal care, with special emphasis on recognition of distress signs that require referral to reduce the first delay in maternal and newborn care;
Mobilize and sensitize village midwives on the importance of post-natal care for maternal and newborn care, particularly in the first week postpartum;
Sensitization of communities on caring practices including hygiene and child marriage through interpersonal communication by trained CHVs, paid health extension workers.
Provide technical guidance and advisory support to the joint resilience project team on the implementation of the different components of resilience through a nutrition lens.
Ensure progress against the indicators in the JRP.
Draft Program/project status reports required for management, Board, donors, budget review, Program analysis, annual reports, etc.
Assumes any other duties and responsibilities assigned as appropriate to the purpose of this post, and delivers the results as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
University degree in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Public Health & Nutrition, Health Sciences, International Health & Nutrition, Family Health & Nutrition, Nutritional Epidemiology, Health & Nutrition Education, Health & Nutrition Promotion and Disease Prevention, Public Health, Health Emergency Preparedness, or other relevant discipline(s).
Five years of professional work experience in IYCF programming.
Experience in behavior change communication programming is an asset.
Training in quantitative and qualitative research is an added value.
Development programing field work experience
Background/familiarity with Emergency.
Experience in monitoring health services inequalities and in programming interventions that reduce these inequalities an asset.
Fluency in both English & Arabic languages.
Computer skills including MS Excel.
