Senior recruitments at NATO Headquarters (Brussels)
The NATO Secretary General is looking to recruit a principal official for his most senior management team to be his primary advisor in the area of Operations.
There are 7 Assistant Secretaries General, all of whom report to the NATO Secretary General and are also accountable to the North Atlantic Council. As a member of the Secretary General’s senior management team, each Assistant Secretary General is also expected to contribute to overall policy development and delivery, including in areas beyond their direct set of responsibilities.
Operations (ref. 150236, post of ASG/OPS)
The Operations Division (OPS) is responsible for providing the operational capability required to meet NATO's deterrence, defence and crisis management tasks. Responsibilities include NATO's crisis management and peacekeeping activities and civil emergency planning and exercises, as well the development of associated policy procedures and planning for potential NATO involvement. The Division oversees the strategic political/military conduct of all current NATO or NATO-led operations and missions, as well as overseeing arrangements for NATO force generation and for non-NATO contributions to NATO-led operations.
The Assistant Secretary General (ASG) reports directly to the NATO Secretary General. He/she is the Secretary General’s primary advisor on Operations and oversees the NATO Crisis Response System. He/she is a member of the Secretary General’s senior management team and will be responsible for managing the OPS Division (approximately 60 staff) including the office of the Senior Civilian Representative in Kabul, and have oversight of the NATO Situation Centre. He/she will be supported in this task by a Deputy.
Candidates for these individual positions must be able to demonstrate the following:
- a proven track record of experience in progressively senior posts in one of the subject areas mentioned above;
- recent experience in senior-level leadership positions and significant professional experience in managerial positions (attracting and developing staff, monitoring performance and fostering continual improvement);
- experience facilitating high-level dialogue and consensus;
- proven leadership in leading and transforming organisations;
- experience of working in a multilateral environment with multiple stakeholders from multi-cultural backgrounds;
- proficiency in one of the two official languages (English/French) of the Organization with a beginner knowledge of the other.
