The King's Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) is a long-term capacity building partnership between King's Health Partners in London and key partner institutions in Freetown, Sierra Leone. KSLP aims to help strengthen Sierra Leone's health system by improving training, clinical services, policy and research. Key partners include the College of Medical & Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), Connaught Government Hospital (the main adult teaching and referral hospital) and the Ministry of Health & Sanitation. Since January 2013 King's has had a small in-country team of volunteers, who are supported by senior experts from the UK.
KSLP is looking to recruit a new Mental Health Doctor Volunteer for its in-country team from June 2015. This role, based in Freetown, will provide support to the faculty and staff at COMAHS, training for medical students, training for mental health nurses and development of mental health services in Freetown. More specifically, the role includes:
Undergraduate Psychiatry teaching at COMAHS
o Implementation of new undergraduate Psychiatry curriculum (for 4th and 5th year
medical students) with focus on clinical skills
o Establish a clinical attachment programme for medical students to the newly formed
Psychosocial & Counselling Department at Connaught Hospital
o Provide mentoring and clinical supervision to nurses with Child and Adolescent Mental
Health training and work with local partners to establish integrated Child and Adolescent
Mental Health Services at Ola During Children's Hospital
o Clinical supervision and ongoing training of mental health nurses in Freetown
o Contribute to monthly peer supervision group for Freetown-based mental health
nurses
o Contribute to training programme for all mental health nurses during their quarterly
continuous professional development programme
o Further develop integrated mental health services within the newly established mental
health units in Freetown , including developing clear referral pathways
o Strengthen mental health and psychosocial support in areas such as HIV and TB care
o Develop mental health awareness training for non-mental health professionals
o Explore opportunities to collaborate with local partners on research
o Attendance at relevant mental health meetings in Freetown
