Senior Forestry Officer (Team Leader, Grade level P-5)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is seeking a dynamic and committed Senior Forestry Officer (Team Leader, Grade level P-5) to provide strong leadership and technical expertise for the
planning, organizing and coordinating the technical and operational delivery of the Department’s work on forest products and their contributions to the bio-economy and the sustainable development goals in the context of the organization’s strategic framework.
Major duties
  • Shapes the Organization’s strategic directions regarding the work on forest products and their contribution to the bio-economy, climate change mitigation and the sustainable development goals of the United Nations;
  • Provides strategic, managerial and technical leadership, guidance and support to the Team on forest products development, marketing and trade, including wood and non-wood forest products, and wood energy;
  • Provides advice to FAO member countries to strengthen their capacity for sustainable development, production, marketing and trade of forest products, especially in the context of the bio-economy, in line with FAO’s work on sustainable value chains;
  • Provides support to country stakeholders in the development of standards for forest products, including certification;
  • Plans, implements, monitors and reports on the technical, operational and financial delivery of the Team’s contributions to FAO’s strategic objectives and provides input into the FAO corporate Programme of Work and related processes;
  • Serves as the Department’s liaison with the private forest sector including the development of strategic partnerships;
  • Serves as the Secretary of the FAO Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest Industries, prepares meetings and leads the implementation of activities agreed by FAO and the Committee;
Qualifications
  • Advanced university degree in Forestry, Wood Science or other related fields
  • Ten years of relevant experience, including international experience, in programme planning and implementation in the area of forest products and/or industries including  in developing countries
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian
